Dodge Ram: How to Replace Heated Side Mirror Glass

Mirrors are essential to you and your passenger's safety. If yours aren't functioning as intended, you could be in for a rough ride. Make the blind spot less blind and repair those mirrors.

This article applies to the Dodge Ram (1994-present).

Mirrors are as essential to a manufacturer's vehicle design as the panels, interior and exterior components, etc. They are crucial to the safety and convenience of the drivers and passengers. Since glass is often affected by the elements, drivers have experienced where the weather is so bad out that the faces of the mirrors would become "iced" and almost impossible to see out of. As technology advanced, manufacturers were able to incorporate a "heating system" (much like with heated seats) that enabled "defrosting" of the mirror glass. The other thing to consider is that "accidents happen," and maybe you've found yourself in a situation where you don't even have a mirror to look out of.

Materials Needed

  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Flat pry tool

Step 1 – Position mirror for removal

Before the mirror can be removed, it needs to be in the right position.

  • If equipped with power mirrors, point the mirror as far down as it will go.
  • If not equipped with power mirrors, pull the top edge of the mirror as far as it will go.

Pro Tip

If most of the mirror is broken, you can use a flat tip screwdriver to pry the mirror down to access tabs.

Step 2 – Remove connectors and release tabs

Once the mirror is in position, you can begin removing it from the housing. If equipped with power/heated mirrors, there will be two connectors to remove.

  • Using the flat tip screwdriver, pry connectors from behind the mirror.
  • Using the flat tip screwdriver, pry upper tabs to release from hinge and mounting clips.
  • Release lower hinge clips from bottom edge of mirror.
  • If connectors are still partially connected, fully disconnect them now.

Pro Tip

It may be easier to pull the connectors by the wires rather than the connectors themselves.

Step 3 – Prep housing and install replacement mirror

Now that the broken mirror has been removed and separated, it can be replaced.

  • Use rubbing alcohol to clean mounting surface.
  • Apply adhesive stickers.
  • Remove backing tape.
  • Set new mirror in place (connectors first if equipped with power/heat).

Pro Tip

Make sure to thoroughly clean out any extra glass or debris before laying down adhesive and mirror.
