Dodge Ram 2009-Present: How to Install Side Step

A side step is an easy exterior modification you can make to your Dodge Ram to make entrances and exits easier.

This article applies to the Dodge Ram 1500 (2009-Present).

A side step makes it easy for you and your passengers to enter and exit your Dodge Ram. It's particularly ideal for a lifted truck that might be a hassle to get into without some added maneuvering. Aside from installing several Riv nuts into the holes along the side of your truck, and bolting the step to your truck, there isn't much work involved in installing a basic side step. You have a number of design options from which to choose from, including all-black and stainless steel to complement the look of your Dodge Ram. Let's get started!

Materials Needed

  • 12 Rivnuts
  • M8X1.25 bolt, 2-inch M8 nut and M8 washer set
  • 6mm Allen wrench
  • Ratcheting closed wrench
  • Masking tape

Step 1 – Assemble your first Rivnut

Screw the nut, washer and rivnut onto the bolt; tighten each tool for the closest fit possible without stripping any of the threading.

Step 2 – Head over to your truck

Install the rivnut assembly into the first hexagonal hole located along the lower portion of your cab (i.e., the lip of the frame); there are 12 holes in total and they are organized by pairs.

  • Cover the other holes you see with masking tape.
  • You will be using these holes later when installing the mounts to your side step onto your truck.
Figure 3. The holes are small, but easy to spot along the frame.

Step 3 – Tighten the bolt

Rotate the nut in a clockwise direction until you feel you are unable to do so any longer, and then rotate the nut in the opposite direction for half a turn. Remove the bolt from the rivnut; it is now properly installed within the first hole.

  • Install the remaining 11 rivnuts in the same manner as you did before.
  • Your side step will contain three mounts, each with a protruding tab.
  • These tabs will fit into the holes located above the row of rivnuts (you covered these holes in Step 2).
  • Align the side step with the holes containing the rivnut you just installed.
  • Using a 13mm socket wrench, bolt the side step into place; continue down the line.
  • Check each bolt for tightness until they feel stable.
  • Your are now done!

Step 4 – Maintain your side step

The truth is your side step could start to produce squeaking noises and other signs of wear, such as shakiness and wobbling, as time passes. To prevent your side step from falling off once signs of wear and looseness does start to occur, you'll want to periodically tighten the bolts. Be sure to use a high quality lubricant when tightening. The lubricant will ensure you achieve the closest fit possible without stripping the threads on your bolts. For added support, install additional backing plates and Rivnuts, or steel reinforcement brackets to the side steps. If at any point the bolts appear cracked or worn, you will need to purchase a replacement set and install them on your side step.

Pro Tip

Do not drive with a loosened or damaged side step. If the side step detaches while your pickup truck is on the road, you will be held legally liable for the damage.
