This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2002-2008).

The purpose of your rear bumper is to absorb the impact energy that is caused by rear end collisions. Beyond this crucial purpose, the rear bumper also takes a daily beating when loading equipment into the bed of the truck. Having a damaged rear bumper not only compromises the safety of your Ram, but it also hurts the value and aesthetics greatly. The steps below will show you how to get back on the road safely with your new rear bumper.

Materials Needed

  • 9/16" socket and ratchet
  • Penetrating spray
  • 11/16" wrench or socket

Step 1 – Remove electrical connections

Remove the licence plate light and trailer connectors from behind the bumper.

  • Figure 2. Remove the light connector.

Pro Tip

These electrical connectors are delicate, so do not force them to come off if they do not pop off easily.

Step 2 – Remove bumper

Remove the 9/16" bolts as shown in Figure 3. There is a 11/16" nut on the other side of the bolts that you will need to have a wrench on to keep it from spinning. The license plate must be removed to access two to three bolts that hold on the rear bumper. Have someone ready to lift the bumper as it will start to come loose. Alternatively, you can use a jack to support the weight of the bumper.

You have just removed a bumper off of your Ram and can either repair or replace/upgrade it!

Pro Tip

Do not try to support the rear bumper while removing it. It it not too heavy, but due to its shape, it is hard to get a grip on.

Step 3 – Install new rear bumper

Install new/repaired bumper using the reverse steps as above. Make sure all of the brackets line up and don't forget the electrical connectors.

Pro Tip

Use a jack to keep the bumper supported in position so that you can concentrate on putting the bolts through the bumper bracket instead of positioning the bumper.
