While you're unlikely to save a lot of money by changing your own oil, there is simply something satisfying about doing it yourself. Plus, if you're new to the world of automotive DIY, it's the perfect place to start learning. Keep reading to get started.

Materials Needed

  • Drip pan
  • Paper towels
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stand
  • Oil filter
  • Oil
  • Oil filter wrench (optional)
  • Wrench (various sizes)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Funnel

Step 1 – Prepare truck for oil change

Pop the hood open and remove the oil fill cap. Jack up the front of the truck and place a jack stand under each side or drive the truck up on ramps if you have them (optional: if you can fit under the truck without jacking it up, by all means do so). Place wheel chocks behind each rear wheel.

Step 2 – Drain old oil

  • Place the drip pan underneath the oil drain plug.
  • Remove the plug using a wrench (size varies).
  • Allow all of the oil to drain from the engine. Once it has stopped, replace the plug and tighten, but be careful not to overtighten. It should just be snug.
  • Next, slide the oil drain pan underneath the oil filter.
  • If the oil filter isn't too tight, you can unscrew it by hand, otherwise use an oil filter wrench. Allow any excess oil to drain and place the oil filter in the drain pan.

Step 3 – Fill oil and replace filter

  • Use your finger to rub some fresh oil around the rubber seal of the new oil filter, then screw it into place by hand until it is snug but not too tight.
  • Use the floor jack to lift the truck off the jack stands and place it back on the ground.
  • Place a funnel in the oil fill tube and slowly fill the oil. Check the level using the dipstick, and make sure to only fill to the fill line.
  • Check underneath the truck for any leaks.
  • Start your engine and let it come up to operating temperature, then recheck your oil level and fill as needed.
