This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2009-present).

A remote starter is a small device that plugs into the ignition switch on your Dodge Ram. It allows you to turn on your truck without having to sit inside and manually turn the key. Since the later 2000's remote starters have been seen as a more common factory option, available to all types of makes and models.

There are two types of remote starters. The first is the factory fitted units, which often just plug into place, then there's the aftermarket kits. If you purchased a new Ram with the factory remote start feature, the dealership would have handed you special remotes made particularly for that truck. However, if the unit was installed afterwords, the fobs are replaced with controllers built specifically for remote starters. Aftermarket remote starters are usually the less expensive option, but may require a third-party shop to install it.

Component Breakdown

Remote Starter Module

The remote start module is the computer responsible for reading the signals sent from the key fob and turning the engine on. However, before it cranks the vehicle over, it checks and ensures all the parameters required to start the vehicle are in place, such as: the doors are shut, the hood latch is closed and there is gas present in the tank.

Key fobs are commonly included when purchasing a new modern vehicle. The top button on this key fob, with the circular arrow, is used to activate the remote start system.
