This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2002-2008).

Aftermarket modifications make it easy for you to upgrade your Dodge Ram truck in as little as a few hours, depending on the difficulty of the installation that is required for your project. And while the truth is you have a variety of options out there from which to choose, we've narrowed our list down to only the absolute best and most popular modifications on the market. These modifications are worthy of your dollar and can actually improve the look and comfort of your vehicle; not all modifications live up to their manufacturer's promises, so we want to save you time and money by doing the legwork for you. We'll cover the projects that work either individually or as a total package.

Aftermarket Modifications

For third generation trucks you have four main options to improve your truck: Remote start installation, LED dash conversion, radio head units and towing mirrors. We recommend going wild and installing all four modifications, but that decision will be up to you and your budget. You are welcome to go beyond these modifications if you choose, and add even more bells and whistles for the most comfortable and attention-seeking ride around.

Remote Start Installation

DIY Cost$300

Professional Cost$500 including parts and labor

Skill LevelProfessional experience needed or extension knowledge of wiring

This is a relatively "affordable" way to gain greater control over how your truck functions. Using a handy remote, you can push a single button to pre-heat or cool your truck, as well as start your engine, long before you ever step foot inside of your cabin. ProStart CT3300, Viper 5902 and Clifford 5906X are the go-to brands for many 3rd generation Dodge Ram owners; however, you might need a mechanic to help you with the wiring. Ignition mobilizer bypass modules offer the greatest protection against frustrations due to programming issues.

LED Dash Conversion

DIY Cost$10 to $50 depending on number of bulbs, intensity and color

Professional Cost $120+

Skill LevelEasy; Installation is straightforward once you remove the instrument cluster

This is the cheapest (and easiest) way to improve your instrument cluster lights. For 3rd generation trucks, Oracle is the go-to brand. Once you remove your instrument cluster, which is the hardest part, all you need to do is remove the old bulbs and screw in the new ones.

Radio Head Units

DIY Cost$200+

Professional Cost$600-700 including labor and parts

Skill LevelEasy to Advanced; Depending on the unit, you might need help with wiring (wiring harnesses are available for purchase)

A head unit replacement is an excellent option for 3rd generation Dodge Ram 1500 owners seeking to upgrade an older original equipment manufacturer (O.E.M.) system with a more powerful slide-out double DIN unit, which we recommend since they offer the most upgrade options. Common features include touch screen, Bluetooth technology, HD tuner, navigation screen and DVD playback. If you wish to keep your Infinity system, but still desire improved stereo sound quality, you might want to add an amplifier to your truck as an alternate modification.

Towing Mirrors

DIY Cost$165-225

Professional Cost$230-350

Skill LevelEasy; You'll only need a few tools

This is the cheapest way to modify your truck. However, keep in mind, quality is important here. A set of poorly installed or poorly manufactured towing mirrors could lead to bothersome vibrations while you drive. As well, the appearance of defects in the actual assembly could arise over time through no fault of your own. Installation is generally easy, but you'll want to be certain your towing mirrors are fully secure before you hit the road.

Pro Tip

As with any DIY project, it's important to know there are installation kits on the market to help you install these and other modifications on your 3rd generation Dodge Ram 1500.
