This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2002-present).

You've had some trouble with your key fob, but you're not exactly sure what the problem is or how to fix it. Don't panic! The truth is a number of culprits could be at play, and almost all are easy to diagnose and repair. If you do need to have your key fob reprogrammed, you can do so by heading down to your local Dodge dealership with your key fob in hand. However, it's recommended that you follow several troubleshooting steps before making the trip. Aside from a few common tools, you won't need professional experience to complete this DIY project. Let's get started with the easiest troubleshooting tips first.

Materials Needed

  • Fresh batteries
  • Key fob
  • Flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Repeatedly press the "start" button on your key fob

Get your key fob to start working again by pressing the "start" button twice; repeat as needed. Doing so should cause the "lock" and "unlock" buttons on your key fob to once again start working. However, if your Dodge Ram 1500 is not equipped with the remote start system, you will be unable to carry out this step.

  • Try pressing the "lock" and then "unlock" button to trigger a response.
  • It's common for key fobs to momentarily stop working. This could be due to competing radio waves in the area.

Step 2 – Check the battery

It might be dead.

While you're checking into the condition of your battery, check the connection between the metal electrical contacts in the key fob to ensure they are connecting properly.

  • Open up your key fob by pulling the key out of the fob and then using it to open up the device.
  • Be careful not to bend any of the contacts when troubleshooting your key fob. Some owners have attempted to create better contact between the points and caused more damage.
  • It's recommended that you avoid "tweaking" any of the electrical components of your key fob. Instead, head down to your local dealership for additional support.
  • If you notice signs of corrosion, your key fob will need to be replaced.
  • Don't forget to close the key fob when you are done!

Pro Tips

  • If you are unable to open your key fob using your hands or a flat head screwdriver, visit your local Dodge dealership for assistance.
  • You can also try rotating the batteries before popping them out completely and then adding a replacement.
  • Never wash a dirty key fob or soak or dampen the internal parts with water.

Step 3 – Have it replaced if under warranty

The device might be unfixable.

If your vehicle is under warranty, ask for a replacement.

  • Make an appointment for faster service.
  • Bring the malfunctioning key fob to the dealership.
  • Request a replacement; your dealer will need to reprogram it once it arrives.
  • Add fresh batteries to the new key fob.
  • If your truck isn't under warranty, you might want to purchase a replacement key fob online for $25 to $30, and then have your dealer program it.

Step 4 – Have your local dealer reprogram the key fob

It might be malfunctioning.

You will not be able to reprogram your key fob. However, if your Dodge Ram is under warranty, you can have a malfunctioning key fob reprogrammed at no cost to you.
