This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2009-present).

Changing the battery in your key fob can be a bit of a hassle. The fob itself is very difficult to open, and if you’re a bit too aggressive with it, you wind up wasting the entire fob, leaving you having to replace the actual fob. This can be a costly mistake, so before you go ahead and begin trying to replace the battery yourself, review these quick and simple instructions on how to properly do it.

Materials Needed

  • New key fob battery
  • Credit card or flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Do you have an emergency key?

If you have an emergency key in the bottom of your fob, remove it. This will make prying the fob open much easier.

Step 2 – Pry fob open

You can use a credit card or a flat head screw driver to slide between the sliver connecting the two halves of the fob. Regardless, be slow. Once you get it to wiggle a bit loose, use your fingers to open it the rest of the way (this will help limit/avoid damage).

Step 3 – Remove and replace battery

Remove the old battery and discard in a proper disposal.

Pro Tip

When you replace the new battery, wear gloves – you want to avoid having skin oil getting on the battery as this may cause battery deterioration. If you do touch the battery with your skin, clean it with rubbing alcohol.

Step 4 – Snap the fob back together

Your smart key fob should work as good as new once the battery is replaced and it is reassembled.
