This article applies to the Dodge Ram 1500 (1994-Present).

There's no getting around it. If driving on muddy roads or tough, unpredictable, sloshy terrain is part of your driving routine, you'll need to purchase a set of tires that guarantee you won't get stranded in the middle of a huge puddle. Or maybe you just need new mud tires to quench your off-road performance needs. Regardless of the reason, your 2WD or 4WD Dodge Ram won't survive the muddiest terrains with stock tires. What will work, and get your truck moving as if it were on dry pavement is a set of large tires that have high traction and thick tread. Take a look at the list compiled below of the mud tires to be most effective on the market today.

Performance – Good

Lifespan – Average

Warranty – 6-year limited

Talk to any off-road junkie and you'll hear a growing consensus: Nitto Mud Grappler tires are one of the best mud tires on the market today. Trusted by members of hunting clubs and off-road driving enthusiasts, the Nitto Mud Grapplers hold up well against tread damage (on and off-road), and with moderate use can have a reasonable lifespan (20k to 25k miles). It's recommended that you have these tires rotated and aligned every 5,000 miles for optimum performance as well as increased lifespan. Reviews are mixed on how well Nitto Mud Grapplers perform on icy and wet roads, so take caution when traveling over pacts of ice or through pools of water. The biggest downside to Nitto Mud Grapplers is their noise on dry pavement. However, these tires are recommended for having one of the longest lifespans among this group of tires.

BFG M/T KM2

Price – $225-$315

Size – 18", 20", and 22"

Performance – Very good

Lifespan – Average

Warranty – 6-year limited

If you are searching for mud tires that combine aggressive traction and high performance to deliver a feeling of ease in most weather conditions, the BFG M/T KM2 tires are a great choice for you. You'll need to look after these mud tires like you would any other; that is, by regular tire rotations, alignments, and avoiding those dry pavements. While these tires tend to cause excessive road noise and provide less grip on ice, they are still a favorite among avid off-road junkies planning to use their Dodge Ram primarily for off-road performance. Recommended for its smooth feel and hard bite on muddy terrain.

Interco Super Swamper TSL and Bogger

Price – $300-$415

Size – 15" to 22"

Performance – Average

Lifespan – Average

Warranty – 6-year limited

While Interco Super Swamper TSL and Bogger tires are considered to be of good quality, they are also known to wear down faster than other mud tires. Reported to emulate the traction quality of all-terrain tires, these Interco mud tires act their best early on when they've just been fitted to your Dodge Ram, and not after miles and miles of travel. As age and wear sets in, you might experience shakiness and loud noises. So the bottom line is that these tires are not for your daily driver. They have mixed reviews, but are overall liked and recommended for its grip on all terrain.

Goodyear Duratrac

Price – $200-$250

Size – Large variety

Performance – Pass

Lifespan – Pass

Warranty – 50,000 miles

Rated favorably for their high traction in dry and frozen road conditions, Goodyear Duratrac tires are solid performers in year-round weather conditions. Most consumers achieve approximately 20,000 miles of life out of their set; however, some daily drivers have claimed to have achieved up to 80,000 miles with minor drawbacks here and there. The most commonly reported problems pertained to more noise at higher mileage, excess wear, and their need for maintenance (e.g., shorter time between tire rotations). Overall, the complaints are few and these tires still manage to deliver reasonable fuel economy for the type of tires they are. Recommended for its aggressive tread design, spacing, and quiet road noise at lower mileage.

Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ

Price – $270-$725

Size 18" to 23"

Performance – Excellent

Lifespan – Excellent

Warranty – 6-year limited

Tough and long-lasting, Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ tires are considered one of the best sets of mud tires on the market today. While somewhat pricey (a complete set could run you anywhere from $1,000 to $1,600 or more), these incredible mud tires don't wear down as quickly on pavement and have high traction in wet, icy, as well as snowy roads. While mileage won't be the greatest, as expected from mud tires, the comfort and overall quality these tires bring to the terrain are highly lauded. The only real negatives of these Mickey Thompson tires are the road noise they produce and their higher prices. Recommended for its steering responsiveness, quality, and high traction on all terrains.
