This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2009-present).

Ever since it was first introduced, the Dodge Ram has gone through several updates and design changes; none were more drastic than that which it received during the mid-90s. None led to a more successful changeover, though, as it was after this update that the truck really began to take off in popularity, leading to what it is today — one of America’s most popular pick-ups. If you’re in the market for a Ram, whether used or new, read on and explore our buyer’s guide to help you make a sound decision on this investment.

Plenty of Options to Choose From

If you’re looking for a Dodge Ram built in 2009 or sooner, then one thing you should consider is the difference in available engines and bed/cabin sizes. All years have either the 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8, or 5.7L V8 engine option to choose from, so consider what you’ll be using the truck for and how much you’ll need before you make your decision.

All years also have different size options to choose from:
• Crew Cab w/ 5'7" bed
• Quad Cab w/ 6'4" bed
• Regular Cab w/ 6'4" bed (sport)
• Regular Cab 8' bed

Again, take into consideration the car’s usage — will you be transporting larger items on a regular basis? Chances are you need a bigger bed. If not, go with the smaller size and save yourself some options.

Additional options to choose from include amenities. There are bare bones packages out there that offer things like air conditioning and standard safety features. If you’re not in the market for a no-frills sort of truck, then maybe you want to go with the sports trim option that offers a few upgrades, like bucket seats and a grille painted to match the truck’s body finish. An option above that would the SLT, which includes things like a navigation system, DVD player, and satellite radio.

Consider MPG

If you’re considering the Dodge Ram against some of its competitors, then one thing you should take into consideration is how well the trucks will perform for you:

Dodge Ram 1500
Chevrolet Silverado 1500
GMC Sierra 1500
Ford F-150
Toyota Tundra
City MPG
17 18 18 17 16
Highway MPG
25 24 24 23 20
Horsepower
305 285 285 302 270
Torque
269 305 305 278 278

Note that these numbers reflect information for the 2014 standard model for each truck. While the Dodge Ram does not offer as much torque as its competitor, it’s pretty even when it comes to miles per gallon; it beats the competition, though, when it comes to highway mileage and horsepower.

Consider the Market

A Dodge Ram’s value varies depending on location, so make sure to do your due diligence in researching the car’s value before you go looking online or visiting dealerships. A good place to start is a trusted source like Kelly Blue Book—this will give you an approximate value of the Ram you’re looking to purchase.

There are a variety of factors that go into consideration before KBB will provide you a quote on the Dodge Ram you’re looking to buy. This includes location, condition of the car, total miles on the vehicle, whether you’re buying from a dealer or private party, and many other factors. In doing a quick search on the site, you'll find that the fair market price for a used 2010 Dodge Ram Quad Cab is $16,141 while a 2009 Dodge Ram Quad Cab is valued at $14,356. The information obtained from this quick and simple search is a huge negotiating advantage to have when you begin meeting with sellers.

Get the VIN

Lastly, before you put money down on your new Dodge Ram, make sure you get the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) from the seller. You can use this information to check a database service for damage history, title information, and other historical data about the vehicle.
