This article applies to the Dodge Ram 1500 (2002-2008).

The Dodge Ram is a great rugged truck, so why let a broken or cracked rear window affect its safety and value? The rear window allows you to see what goes on behind your truck, which can help you avoid potential accidents and shields your interior from the environment. Without a functioning rear window, you are left guessing what is behind you. It could pose a danger to you and the truck's safety. Aside from how dangerous a broken rear window may be, it is also illegal and could cost you a ticket from the nearest law enforcement officer. Here's how to replace that eye sore of a rear window so you can get back on the road safely and in style.

Materials Needed

  • New rear window (OEM or aftermarket)
  • WD-40 (optional)
  • Flat head screwdriver (optional)

Step 1 – Remove the bottom rubber window track

Carefully grab the bottom rubber track of your window as shown in Figure 1. You should be able to pull out and slide this rubber strip with ease. Be sure not to damage this rubber seal as it could lead to leaks in the future. Refer to the featured video below to see an animated version of this step.

Pro Tip

Use WD-40 or another lubricant spray to make removal of the rubber track easier.

Step 2 – Remove the top rubber window track

In a similar fashion to the bottom window track, slowly release and pull out the top rubber window track. In case you are unsure which window track goes where, the top window track is wider than the bottom track. Set aside the window track and keep the window in place as it is almost free now.

Pro Tip

Do not force the rubber track to come out. Instead, try using a flat head screwdriver to free the rubber from the metal window frame.

Step 3 – Remove old window

Next, pull the window up and towards you, and it should pop out of its grooves since the tracks are removed. Be cautious not to drop the glass.

Pro Tip

Lubricate your window tracks to insure smooth operation in the future since they are already exposed.

Step 4 – Install new window

Install your new window by popping it into the metal frame and groove first. Then, reinstall the rubber tracks in the reverse order so that the window is firmly held in place. You have successfully saved yourself a bag of cash and can be proud to drive a safe truck again.
