This article applies to the 2nd Generation Dodge Ram (1994-2001).

Ramp up the sound quality in your Dodge Ram, so that you can't wait to get into the driver's seat and cruise. When it comes to stereos, the big hitters are the head unit, subwoofers, a better quality door/cabin speakers, and an amplifier.

Choose From Three Major Upgrades (Or All Three)

Upgrades to the original stereo in your Dodge Ram include:

  • A better radio
  • Better speakers
  • Adding subwoofers (with subwoofer box and amplifier)

Double or Single DIN Radio

DIY Cost – $650-$1,300 for the new radio

Professional Cost – $187.50 plus the cost of the radio

Skill Level – Moderate; it takes some understanding of electronics and wiring.

DIN refers to the Deutsches Institut fur Normung. This is the German standards group that created the standards we use for audio heads in cars and trucks today. A single DIN measures approximately 7" x 2" (180 x 50mm). Double DIN refers to a measurement of twice the height, or 7" x 4" (180 x 100mm). If your truck has a single DIN opening, it is best if your upgraded radio is also single DIN for ease of installation, especially if you're installing yourself. In other words, you want to keep the same size. Some Dodge Ram owners prefer double DIN models and have modified the openings in the dash to accept this size.

Radios are not what they used to be, they are a whole lot more. Along with an AM/FM radio, you can get GPS navigation, and a CD player. Options include a rear blind-spot camera and MP3 integration ability. Many models are also satellite radio ready (subscription and tuner required). Recommended for its features.

Speakers

DIY Cost – $40 for a set of front (or rear) speakers; $400 for set that includes amplifier and wiring

Professional Cost – $112.50 and up, plus parts

Skill Level – Easy; no special skill is required.

Add new and improved front as well as rear speakers to the Dodge Ram for clarity, for better tone, or if yours are blown. Replacing stock speakers is an easy job with the correct wiring harness. With a kit, you also get an amplifier, installation instructions, and the wiring you need.

OEM equipment speakers use paper cone backing plates for acoustics. These were designed to be cost-effective first, and sound quality as a distant second. Quality aftermarket units offer superior construction for better acoustics, appearance, and durability. Most aftermarket door speakers are sold in common sizes such as 4" x 6", so measure your speaker openings to purchase the right size for your ride. Recommended for its easy installation.

Subwoofers and Amplifier

DIY Cost – $350-$700

Professional Cost – $75-$300 in labor, depending on what you want done, plus the cost of parts.

Skill Level – Easy; no special skill is required.

The subwoofer provides the big booming bass that you want. The amplifier offers the power needed to sustain the system. Combine those with a custom enclosure, and you're in business. Enclosures offer superior acoustics, reduce rattling as well as vibrations from subwoofer movement, can give the OEM-like look and packaging that you want. Recommended for its sound.
