This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2009-present).

Cabin air filters help to keep particles, dust, and allergens out of your truck's cabin where they belong. But while many (if not most) new vehicles come equipped with these filters, certain models of the Dodge Ram do not. Thankfully, installing one is a very easy job that doesn't require many tools, and it can be done pretty quickly. The area for the cabin air filter is already installed, and all you have to do is cut out a slot for the filter to go in. Then you can use your choice of OEM or aftermarket filter. The OEM Dodge cabin air filter is a little flimsy, so you may want to spend a few dollars more to go with a sturdier aftermarket option.

Materials Needed

  • Box cutter or X-ACTO knife
  • Filter box lid (part number 68052292AA)

Step 1 – Remove glove box and cut area for housing

First, remove the lower glove box by carefully pulling in on both sides where the "ears" are located. Locate the filter slot area, which is shaped like a short, fat "T." Using a box cutter or X-ACTO knife, cut out the area located inside of the "T," leaving the lower leg intact. Just cut straight across as seen in Figure 1.

Figure 1. Cut out the area as shown.

Step 2 – Install new cabin air filter

Slide the cabin air filter in the slot you have created, making sure that the arrow on the filter is facing down to match the air flow. When properly install, the filter will stick out of the slot a little, so don't be alarmed. It is not designed to sit flush with the outside of the slot. Snap the lid back in place by pressing on the ears on each side of it while pushing it in. You will hear an audible click when the lid is locked into place. Reinstall the lower glove box and you're all set!

Figure 2. When installed, the filter will protrude from the housing a little, which is normal.
