Dodge Ram 1994-2001: How to Replace Ignition Coils

So your truck will not fire up? Your ignition coil is probably toast. Luckily, you can use these instructions to replace it.

This article applies to the Dodge Ram 2nd Generation (1994-2001).

The ignition coil is responsible for taking a battery's low voltage and turning it into thousands of volts of electricity. When these fail, you will not be able to start the truck. Although some vehicles have internal coils located inside the distributor, Dodge made it easy for Ram owners and installed an external coil. This makes the replacement procedure a lot easier, and will have you getting your truck back on the road in less than an hour. Use the following instructions to replace the ignition coil on your Dodge Ram.

Materials Needed

  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm combination wrench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver

Step 1 – Disconnect battery and remove air box

You will be removing the component that holds a deadly amount of voltage, take the time to remove the negative (black) battery cable. Then, use the adjustable wrench to loosen the air filter top cover, pry the clips, and open it.

  • Remove the air filter.
  • Use the 10mm socket to remove the air filter box.

Step 2 – Remove the old coil

  • Unplug the coil wire.
  • Take a 10mm wrench and place it on the back side of the coil bracket. Then use the socket to loosen the 10mm bolts.
  • Remove both bolts.

  • Disconnect the wire plug that connects to the coil.

Step 3 – Install the new coil

  • Mount the new coil onto its bracket.
  • Slide the 10mm bolts in place.
  • Tighten the bolts down.
  • Reconnect the harness plug to the coil.
  • Reconnect the distributor plug to the coil.

Step 4 – Re-install the air filter box

  • Mount the air filter box back in place.
  • Tighten the 10mm bolts.
  • Clip the air box back in the passenger's side front-end.
  • Install the air filter.
  • Install the air filter box cover on and tighten the top bolt to a snug fit.
