A Chinese-Hawaiian businessman named Ellery Chun got the idea to market a local style of shirts to make money for his family when he found himself broke after seven years of the Great Depression (1936). The idea saved his small shop and started a trend that will never completely go out of style. Chun placed the shirts in his front store window along with a sign reading, "Aloha Shirts," and a tradition began.
