Slideshow: There is an ACR Viper Extreme Rallying in Australia

While most rally drivers stick to all-wheel drive machines, this Aussie team insists on doing things the hard way!

Against the Grain

In the world of rallying, all-wheel drive machines dominate. Most of these race-bred rides are also small and lightweight, with the focus remaining on grip and cornering ability. So you would be forgiven to think that anyone willing to pilot a Dodge Viper around these treacherous, potentially deadly corners would have to have a screw loose. And yet, Australian outfit Whitehot Motorsport is doing exactly that.

Natural Evolution

With a massive V10 up front and rear-wheel drive, it can certainly be a handful. But those of us in the know also realize that over the years, the Viper became much tamer. And more capable on the track. The Viper can still seem like a ludicrous car to take on a rally but you have to remember that even the most dangerous vehicles can be reined in with the right driver behind the wheel and ample respect given to it.

Choose Your Weapon

Whitehot's rally weapon of choice is actually a 2016 ACR Extreme, one of the more capable Vipers ever created. And believe it or not, they didn't even have to make major modifications to transform the Viper into a rallying masterpiece.

Lightly Modified

Most of the modifications, in fact, were simply necessary to meet Targa Tasmania regulations. Otherwise, it's all about speed. And, of course, catching plenty of air underneath those massive tires.

Catching Major Air

Despite the ACR's abundance of aero and the incredible amounts of downforce generated by it, this Viper appears to be rather prone to flying over bumpy surfaces. While that might cause the lesser of us to soil our pants a little, these guys don't seem to mind.

Six Days of Guts (and Glory)

But of course, the Targa Tasmania isn't for the light-hearted, to begin with. Instead, it's one of the most intense rallies on the planet, filling up six days of hardcore racing action on the Australian island of Tasmania.

No Room for Error

You don't exactly get second chances at glory, either. Each driver has only one shot at each stage, making mistakes extremely costly. But this Viper's driver, Jason White, already has seven Targa Tasmania wins under his belt, so he's pretty familiar with the course.

Dare to Be Different

Unlike many rally events, the diversity of rides that tackle the Targa Tasmania is pretty vast. From classic vintage racers to supercars and your typical rally machines. But Whitehot's ACR Viper is probably the most unique ride of them all.

Defying Physics

But it wasn't until a change in rules took place that Whitehot could make this rally Viper possible. And even though it may not seem physically possible, the venomous machine makes mincemeat of the course, as you can see in this video.

Recipe for Success

In fact, two of White's seven Targa Tasmania wins have come in the Viper - 2017 and 2018. With the help of his father, master navigator John White, that is. But the younger White is obviously a skilled driver, taming this Viper like few others could. And in the meantime, he sure looks cool doing it!
