Lifelong Racer

In the world of Mopar performance, few names live up to the great "Dandy" Dick Landy. Landy spent his entire life drag racing, many of those years behind the wheel of a Dodge, including this incredible Super Stock Dart up for grabs at Mecum's upcoming Harrisburg auction on July 31-August 3.

Making the Switch

Landy participated in Stock, Super Stock, A/FX, and Pro Stock drag racing during his decorated career. But after spending his early years wrenching on and racing Fords, he switched to Plymouth in 1962 and then Dodge in 1964.

First Funny Car

It was that very first year that Landy created what most consider the very first funny car by radically altering the wheelbase of his Dodge 330 Hemi racer. This included moving the front axle forward six inches and the rear axle forward eight inches.

Rare Ride

Landy and Dodge were a match made in heaven, as both continued to thrive into the late '60s. And it was during that time when he campaigned in the NHRA Super Stock class in this very '68 Dart, one of just 80 built for such duties.

Row Your Own

Perhaps even more interestingly, this particular car was the only Dick Landy Hemi Dart that utilized a 4-speed manual transmission. Despite this, the car managed a best quarter-mile time of 10.46 and a high trap speed of 131.19 mph in the fall of '68.

Beefy Parts

This factory-built racer featured a Cross Ram intake manifold, dual 4-barrel carbs, Hooker headers, and a Dana rear end loaded with 4.88 gears to rocket down the strip as fast as possible.

Interesting Features

Other interesting features include lightweight body panels, a wood-rimmed steering wheel (for whatever reason), a column-mounted tach, and of course, those legendary Cragar S/S wheels.

Standing Out

Painted in a unique silver, blue, and orange color combo, there was no mistaking this Landy Dart at the drags. It was quite simply a standout ride for a standout drag racer.

Forging a Legacy

Landy's efforts after his time in the relatively "mild" Dart continued to forge his legacy. In fact, with the help of other notable racers like Grumpy Jenkins, he also played a large role in helping to create the wildly popular NHRA Pro Stock class.

Good Old Days

Unfortunately, the Hemi's dominance of drag racing is also what forced the NHRA to change their rules, which is when Landy's relationship with Mopar ended. But today, we can look at his amazing rides like this Dart and remember the good old days, when Dandy Dick ruled the drag strip.
