A restomod like none other

Just 48 years ago this car rolled off of the production line with so many more just like it. However, unlike many of those other cars, this one is still going strong. Very strong. This Charger is now known as "Tantrum" and was heavily upgraded by the good folks at SpeedKore Performance out of Port Washington, Wisconsin. The car is a mix of menacing black and exposed carbon fiber which David Salvaggio of SpeedKore remarks that “carbon is not the future, it’s the present.”

As light as you can get it

Carbon fiber has been used extensively in the build, with the front fenders, hood, valances, bumpers, and the marker lights assemblies all created from pre-preg carbon.  However, rather than just throwing parts on and calling it a day, guys working on the exterior faded the raw weave into the black PPG paint so that it was barely visible under the murky coat. The paint/carbon fiber isn't the only cool bit about the outside of the car as various panels are now a mix of metal and aluminum to cut down on curb weight. For example, the tail panel of the Charger was custom CNC'd and uses the lights from a 2014 Challenger. The grille of the Tantrum is a bespoke creation that was milled from a 72-inch block of solid aluminum and then outfitted with a set of custom projector headlights.

If a demon is 840hp, is this the Devil?!

Under the hood is a QC4V engine setup from Mercury Racing. If you're scratching your head wondering if it's from a Mercury vehicle, it's not. This is a Mercury Marine engine that was created to power watercraft vehicles. Tantrum is the very first road legal vehicle that is powered by a Mercury engine. Mercury Marine had previously dabbled in the automotive world back in the 1990's when the company handled production of the LT5 V8 in the C4 ZR1. The QC4V is a 90-degree double overhead cam 94mm twin-turbocharged V8 that displaces 9-liters. That setup produces an asphalt cracking 1,650 horsepower!

All through a pistol grip shifter

Withstanding all of that power is a Tremec T56 Bowler 6-speed transmission. The chassis of the Tantrum runs a Roadster Shop front clip that was altered and reinforced to handle all of the extra power, while the rear is home to a custom 4-link system that surrounds the 9-inch differential. All that is in addition to the inner fenders, frame rails, floors, and a roll bar which was either water-jetted or laser-cut fabricated in-house at SpeedKore.

Black on black on black

For the interior, designer Sean Smith put some idea through CAD before having them CNC'd and installed. There is plenty of carbon fiber in the cabin along with Alcantara and leather trim courtesy of Gabe's Custom Interior. Up front, there is a custom instrument panel and a black finished Billet Specialities steering wheel that complements the rest of the interior perfectly.

As crazy as the Mercury engine is it's now offered as a crate engine for other builders to start using in their automotive projects. Here is the link to their site should any of your be craziest enough to throw one of these into your vehicle.
