Not Caught Snoozing

We all knew the Demon would be fleeting, but that didn't make its departure any easier for the Mopar faithful. No matter if you were ready to put your money down for one or just liked knowing that Chrysler was still king of the horsepower hill. Well, don't despair dear Dodge lovers, the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is on its way, with its brethren, the new Challenger R/T Scat Pack Widebody and updated Challenger SRT Hellcat in tow. The best part is that they're made of more than just a badge here or a flare there, they incorporate a few of the Demon's best pieces.

For its part, the Hellcat Redeye inherits the Demon's potent 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi—though slightly detuned from the Demon's lofty 840 hp peak. The Redeye's 797 hp and 707 pound-feet of torque make it the "most powerful production V8" according to Dodge, and its 3.4-second 0-60 time and 10.8-second quarter-mile time (at 131 mph) make it the "quickest production muscle car." Terminal speed is also impressive, breaking the magic 200mph barrier with its 203 mph top end.

Dodge gave the Redeye's Hemi 25 significant upgrades, chief among them Demon's 2.7-liter blower, delivering a maximum 14.5 psi of boost, up from the previous Hellcat's 2.4-liters and 11.6 psi. To keep everything together under all that pressure, and at the Redeye's upped 6,500 rpm redline, the new model also receives beefier connecting rods, stronger pistons, and uprated valvetrain components. A revised high volume fuel injection system fed by an extra fuel pump supplies the added fuel needed to mix with all that forced air, and an enhanced lubrication system ensures reliable function under even the heaviest foot.

Gears are Turning

As anyone who's ever heard the word Torqueflight knows, Hemis go well with automatics, and the Hellcat Redeye's engine is mated to a capable eight-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can have their choice of either the standard 2.62:1 final drive ratio, or an optional 3.09:1 rear end for even brisker launches.

Green Light

While we're on brisk launches, the Hellcat Redeye gets the Demon's Torque Reserve system as well. The system enables the Supercharger to build additional boost while the vehicle stands stationary, preparing for the driver to pull the trigger. The Redeye also borrows the Demon's air-conditioner intercooler that provides an even denser intake charge than possible with a conventional intercooler. It's an A/C system even A/C-deprived muscle car era 426 Hemis would approve of.

More Help

The list of strip-friendly gear doesn't end there though. What does every drag car, or street car for that matter, need for a quick getaway? Right, rubber. The Hellcat Redeye and Hellcat Widebody will be wearing the Demon's bulging fender flares. All the better to hold the rubber needed for Hemi-powered fun.

Mopar Miser

How frequent your fillups will naturally depend on your driving habits. Say, for instance, you plan on running flat out—in that case, under wide open throttle, Dodge says you'll have 11 minutes 'til there's nothing left but fumes. In case you don't want to tow a trailer of gas cans behind you, you're in luck—the Redeye is EPA-rated at 22mpg highway. Road Trip!

Both SRT Hellcats—which also get a power bump: up 10 hp for 717 total for 2019—and Hellcat Redeyes will get the new forward twin-snorkel hood. The new scoops, which are supposed to recall the hood treatments found on '70s Dart Demons, but just as closely resemble those found on period Firebird Formulas or Shelby Mustangs, work to lower engine temps by 4 degrees Fahrenheit. For all those pulling up next to a Hellcat at the next set of lights, the way to distinguish between the new king of the street, and the only slightly less potent Hellcat iterations, is what Dodge calls "a sinister red jewel-like eye design," incorporated into the fender badge, joining a similar emblem affixed to the blower housing underhood. Redeyes are slated to roll off Ontario production lines starting this fall, so start writing your Holiday gift lists now. In the meantime, enjoy these images, from Dodge, of the Redeye playing in the desert. Hmmm, maybe that's where they figured out the 11 minutes of fuel at full throttle thing.
