The Alfa Romeo That’s Not Really an Alfa

Despite its classic badge and coachbuilt Italian styling, the TZ3 Stradale is, at its core, a Dodge Viper. Built on the Viper ACR-X platform, it retains the American car’s monstrous 8.4-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine, churning out 640 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired to a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, staying true to the raw, analog driving experience that defined the Viper. But while the bones are American, everything visible is Zagato—curves, aluminum, carbon fiber, and eccentric beauty.

Only Nine in Existence

Zagato built just nine examples of the TZ3 Stradale between 2010 and 2011, making it one of the rarest Alfa-badged vehicles in modern history. It was a commemorative project marking Alfa Romeo's 100th anniversary and Zagato's own legacy of Alfa-bodied racers from the 1960s. Inspired by cars like the original TZ1 and TZ2, the TZ3 is more sculpture than supercar in appearance, complete with a “double bubble” roof and distinctive wraparound rear glass.

Tailgate Tricks and Unusual Engineering

In perhaps the most unexpected design decision, the rear hatch of the TZ3 opens downward like a pickup truck’s tailgate. This unconventional hinge system includes cutouts for the circular taillights and integrates seamlessly into the carbon fiber rear. Functionality is limited, cargo must be inserted through a narrow aperture, but practicality was clearly not the primary goal. As one observer put it, the car “prioritizes form over function, or function over reliable, practical operation,” a description that might as well be Alfa Romeo’s mission statement.

Inside: Italian Leather with American Quirks

The cabin of the TZ3 features lush caramel-colored leather upholstery draped over nearly every surface, aiming for traditional Italian opulence. But look closer and you’ll spot the unmistakable remnants of Chrysler's early-2010s interior parts bin. The infotainment head unit, in particular, betrays its Dodge origin. It's a peculiar juxtaposition, like someone tailored an Armani suit over a pair of work boots.

Low Miles, Some Baggage

Despite being nearly 15 years old, this specific TZ3 has just 1,900 miles on the odometer. Finished in a rich Dark Blue Metallic, it was recently serviced with new spark plugs and underwent mechanical refreshes, including a rebuilt steering rack, new front coilovers, and rear end links. Notably, the car was rear-ended shortly after its delivery in 2012, but Zagato handled the repairs, restoring the car to its original form. This doesn’t seem to have deterred collectors; its rarity still holds tremendous appeal.

Price Tag: North of $600K

Originally listed for $675,000 by a U.S. dealer, the car failed to sell directly and was relisted on Bring a Trailer. It had previously sold for $632,000, a surprising jump over its pre-auction estimate of $450,000 to $550,000. As of the most recent listing, bidding had reached $325,000 with three days remaining. While the seller may be aiming for another profit, it’s unclear if the market will respond with the same enthusiasm this time around.

Oddball, Unicorn, or Masterpiece?

The Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale Zagato exists in a strange liminal space, equal parts muscle car and design study, both Detroit and Milan. It’s loud, rare, and deeply eccentric. In many ways, it embodies the brief moment of optimism surrounding the Fiat-Chrysler merger: an era when unlikely collaborations led to bizarrely compelling results. Whether it’s remembered as a design oddity or a collector’s dream, one thing is certain: there’s nothing else quite like it.
