Serving America's truck owners like never before

Ram went big in 2019 and FCA's truck brand had its best-ever sales year, with an amazing resurgence. But what drove those sales? According to FCA, it was the result of investing in technology and a three-truck strategy for the Ram product offensive. Special edition trucks, like this Built to Serve version, certainly helped too.

Better interiors helped a lot

Trucks might firstly impress with their imposing presence, but cabin comfort is the lasting impression that wins over customers. Ram invested heavily in making their trucks more comfortable, with improved ergonomics and better infotainment features. These trucks might still ride on traditional ladder-frame chassis, and be able to work really hard for a living, but they'll also place nice with your latest Smartphone updates.

Playing smart, with your phone

For a long time, truck owners were only concerned about having robust cup holders, to keep their hot or cold beverages secure on the move. But in 2019, Ram proved that the Smartphone is now a more important feature over any automotive interior design. The result is that Ram included this clever non-slip stowage area for your Smartphone, into their trucks. And best of all, the Ram also has a wireless charging pad, which makes a big difference and avoids the annoyance of needless cables.

Grouping the drive functions

Another point of appeal with Ram is that your crucial drive systems' functions are close to hand. Instead of a traditional shifter select stalk, there is a turn dial system. It also has the four-wheel-drive select buttons, which means you can intuitively manage any traction challenge, without having to move your hand too far off the steering wheel.

No substitute of capability

But this is what Ram's success was really all about: ability, in all conditions. And across any terrain. With its five-position all-wheel-drive system, the Ram is not readily stopped by any challenge. These trucks can operate in the snowy winter outback of Montana, or the sweltering heat of Texas. They keep their occupants cool and comfortable, whilst managing to find traction on any terrain. Hence the sales momentum in 2019.

Banking on the popularity of a good diesel engine

Diesel fuel has been another driver of the Ram's marketing momentum. With its new 3-liter V6 EcoDiesel engine, Ram offered customers the combination of good fuel mileage with great torque. With 260hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, the numbers certainly made sense to a great many truck buyers in 2019.

eTorque hauls the load

American truck customers like to haul and Ram is certainly up to it. With the eTorque engine option, Ram offers a 5.7-liter Hemi V8, with hybridization. The result is 395hp and 410 lb-ft, which translates to a towing capacity of 12,750 lb. Although many truck owners think a 48-volt integrated start-generator system is only for saving fuel, like a traditional hybrid engine, the eTorque system is all about boosting tow performance. And it does.

Blending old with new - was the secret

How well did Ram do in 2019? Well, sales were up 18% year-on-year. Ram posted its best-ever truck sales year in 2019, with a total of 633 694 units delivered to customers. Its investment in technology, especially the eTorque engine and Smartphone cabin syncing, made a huge difference. Combined with Ram's traditional truck virtues of durability and off-road ability, it helped the brand to its best sales ever.
