1973 Plymouth Barracuda Customized For McLaren Auctioned on eBay Motors
This McLaren-inspired muscle car, driven by Lando Norris and signed by the F1 star was auctioned for a great cause.
Lando Norris' Ride Goes to Auction
A unique 1973 Plymouth Barracuda, decked out with styling touches inspired by the McLaren F1 team and personally driven by superstar driver Lando Norris during the United States Grand Prix weekend, was recently auctioned on eBay Motors. Originally built in partnership with eBay as a promotional vehicle for the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) race in Texas, this vibrant Papaya Orange coupe isn’t just a collector's item; it’s also a chance to support a meaningful cause. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Society of Women Engineers.
Modern Meets Classic
The Barracuda started as a largely stock muscle car but underwent extensive upgrades by Alex Taylor Racing. Using eBay Motors’ "Guaranteed Fit" tool to source parts, the team outfitted the vehicle with modern features like coilover suspension, Wilwood disc brakes, and ceramic-coated headers paired with a new exhaust system. The aesthetic upgrades include American Racing Torq Thrust D wheels wrapped in Cobra Radial T/A GT tires and Holley LED headlights. Inside, the car received modern bucket seats, fresh carpeting, and a Momo wood steering wheel.
McLaren Influence in Every Detail
The car’s standout feature is its Papaya Orange 3M wrap, a nod to McLaren's iconic F1 livery. Beneath the vibrant exterior, the Barracuda retains its original silver paint. Another defining touch is Norris' signature on the dashboard, making this car a one-of-a-kind conversation piece. These enhancements perfectly blend vintage muscle car vibes with McLaren's high-tech racing culture, resulting in a vehicle that’s as much a tribute to the past as it is to modern motorsport.
A Rare Opportunity for Collectors
Barracudas from this era typically sell for around $40,000, but this bespoke model fetched far more, given its high-profile history and upgrades. At the end of the bidding period on Sunday, the winning number came in at $70,200. For those wanting a closer look, the car was also displayed at the Virgin Curio Hotel in Las Vegas during Formula 1 festivities.
Racing for a Cause
More than just an impressive build, the car represents a collaboration between McLaren and eBay Motors to give back. Every penny from the sale will go to the Society of Women Engineers, supporting their mission to empower women in the engineering field. For fans of classic cars, Formula 1, or charitable giving, this auction presented a chance to own a unique piece of automotive history while contributing to a greater purpose.
