Kin You Dig it?

Dave Kindig of Kindig-it Design is a well-known name in the custom car industry.  His show, Bitchin’ Rides has aired on Motor Trend Network for several years and has expanded his reputation as a custom car king.  Kindig’s latest entry in the specialty car world is a reimagined 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T.

Mopar Legacy

When most people consider Mopar restorations, Chargers and Challengers are usually among the first candidates to come to mind.  The car’s owner, Vinnie Massaro, is a self-described Mopar lover.  When envisioning his build, he settled on a Dodge Coronet because he wanted something different.  “Everyone does a 'Cuda, Challenger, or Charger. I wanted to give Dave something that wasn't that mainstream, to begin with. It's not that I had some love affair with the Coronet, but I told him when he did it, you have to dig deep into everything that you do because I want people to look at the car and say, 'What the hell is this?' And then be able to walk around it and pick up all the stuff that was done to it. I am a Mopar guy, so anything that would be done to it I would not be particularly upset with, but I wanted to test Dave's limits to see what he could do with a car that most people think of as a brick," Massaro said.

Numbers Matching

When the search began for a build car, Kindig was concerned that he’d be perusing a list of rust buckets for a potential donor vehicle.  Kindig came across a numbers matching, 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T in good condition.  Much to the chagrin of purists, Kindig transformed a piece of Mopar history into a bright blue badass with white leather interior.  Kindig redesigned the Coronet with inspiration from the current Challenger Hellcat.  The car was disassembled, dipped in an acid bath and prepped for the build.

Down to the Frame

After the acid dip, the 1967 Dodge Coronet’s underside was cut away and the rest of the structure was placed on an Art Morrison frame.  The new configuration was similar to a Corvette C6 suspension.

Cut, Chopped and Supercharged

After adding the new frame, the Coronet made it to the roller stage.  Kindig and his crew decided to change the roof because he wasn’t satisfied with the angle of the car’s original design.  The Coronet roof was cut and chopped to reflect Kindig’s plan.  A custom this nice needs to have something under the hood to show off too.  Kindig dropped in a Hellcat long-block engine with a Whipple 2.9-liter twin-screw supercharger.  The new powerplant rates the 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T at 770 horsepower and 750-pound feet of torque at 6,100 RPM.
