This article applies to the Dodge Ram 4th Generation (2009-Present).

Like everyone else, you're concerned about a smooth running engine and better gas mileage. One of the quick and easy things you can do is to simply open up the hood of your Dodge Ram pickup to replace the air filter. Often, it will become dirty, caked with dust, and (without your knowledge) it will restrict air flow.

Restricted air flow will cause your truck's engine to run with less than excellent performance. A rough running engine will cause you to lose performance and lower gas mileage, not to mention draining your wallet because of more frequent trips to the gas pump. But there's hope. Simply follow the instructions below to put in a new, clean air filter, and say "hello" to a smoother running engine and better gas mileage. Your wallet will thank you.

Materials Needed

  • New air filter

Step 1 – Locate and remove air filter

  • Raise the hood of your truck and locate the air box, which houses your air filter. See Figure 1.
  • Undo the four clips that hold the air box cover on the unit.
  • Lift up the air box lid and pull out the old air filter as shown in Figure 2.

Pro Tip

Please note that this air filter is reusable. If it gets dirty, simply blow it out with air or wash it with a hose. After it air dries, you can replace it in the air box and you're good to go.

Step 3 – Wrapping up

Ensure that the air box is secured down, and then start the truck to ensure that it is running smoothly. Also, make sure it is free of check engine lights or vacuum leaks.
