The Dodge Stealth, also sold as the
Mitsubishi GTO or the
Mitsubishi 3000GT, was made available in the fall of 1990. The Stealth differed from the GTO or 3000GT in that it was sold in Canada and the United States, while the others were sold in Japan, Europe, and the United States. The Stealth would be produced until 1996. While Mitsubishi wanted a true sports car, Dodge wanted to keep the base model of the Stealth under $17,000, so the vehicle was based on the
Eclipse chassis but was more aggressively styled than the Eclipse had been which was appealing to most buyers.
The base model of the Stealth was powered by a 3.0 liter 24 valve V6 engine that was capable of producing 222 horsepower at 6000 rotations per minute with 201 lbs per ft of torque at 4500 rotations per minute. A 3.0-liter dual overhead cam 24 valve V6 engine that produced 222 horsepower powered the SL. Many believe that over optioning is what finally led to the demise of both the Dodge Stealth and the 3000GT as the price was to remain low for the base model, but over time the price crept up and turned most buyers off especially when the engine was changed and it provided substantially less power. While the Stealth was produced only until 1996, it is still quite popular today and has quite the following.
