Dodge Omni

The Dodge Omni Shelby GHLS #276/500 owned by Todd Nelson of Minneapolis, MN The Dodge Omni is a front wheel drive car that was introduced by Dodge in 1978. The Omni was available in North American markets and was very similar to the Plymouth Horizon. The Omni was actually considered a sub subcompact car, and was a five-door hatchback. The Omni was also sold as the Talbot Horizon in some foreign markets, though it was only known as the Dodge Omni or Plymouth Horizon the in the North American markets. Dodge built the Omni on the Chrysler L platform and was one of the first times that Dodge had built a subcompact vehicle of their own, as they had always preferred subcompact captive imports like the Dodge Colt. But, Chrysler was looking for support, and subcompact cars were becoming more and more popular. The Omni was equipped with a 1.7 OHC engine provided by Volkswagen and MacPherson Strut front suspension. Eventually a 2.2-liter engine would be offered as an option starting in 1981 and this produced 84 horsepower. The handling was criticized early on, but as front wheel drive caught on the criticism wasn't nearly as harsh and actually went on to be quite a success. The Omni celebrated a great success, but production was finally stopped in 1990.
