Hey guys I just had couple quick questions. Well you see my bro is lookin to get a vehicle and he really likes the jeep wrangler. Only thing is he don't like everyone else in the world want bad gas miliege. So my question is does the 1991-1995 generation of wranglers with the 2.5 engine get decent gas miliege i.e. 18-20 mpg. And does the 2.5 have a lot problems with the engine or not? Any advice u guys have would help because recently hes been tryin to steal my 1st gen dakota that im fixin up[:@]

you will get 18-20 if you stay outta the throttle. the 2.5 is a fine little 4cyl engine. dont expect it to haul ass though. and dont go puttin big tires on it or it wont move at all. its fine for around town or flat highway, but once you get into the mountains, expect to downshift alot. i have a 4.0 that i dont drive much cause of the gas issue. now i wish i had a 2.5 for around town.

why are the wranglers getting bad mileage? what did they get from the factory? there are ways to help mileage out that are pretty cheep... one being to wrap the fuel rail to prevent heat soak on it. keeps the fuel cooler which will cool the intake charge some providing a small boost in low -mid power.

Personally it doesnt' matter whether you get the 4.0 or 2.5, they both get the same milage funny enough. Basically because of the axle gear ratio, the 2.5 has a larger ratio then the 4.0. If I remember correctly the 2.5 has 4.10 ratio and 4.0 has a 3.07, that's why the gas is so close to each other. I was looking at the 2.5 has a commuter and found out about the gas, decided on a Neon instead. I don't know if this is going to help, just figure I would throw in my 2 cents.

Ok dude. I had a 95 Rio grande with the 2.5/5spd and 31 inch tires, drove it for 6 years. I just paid off my '00 TJ sport with 4.0, 5spd and 32" tires. Basically you're not going to see 20 mpg no matter what you do. Jeeps have crappy aerodynamics and are fairly heavy for their size. Theres just nothing you can do about it. The difference in mileage between these 2 is negligible. For the amount of power you gain with the 4.0 not to mention its ability to retain its value better theres no comparison.

That 2.5 engine is torquey at low rpms and will be more than adequate for low speed trail riding and off roading. Its pretty reliable and you'll get it to run prolly 150K miles if you maintain it. BUT, the transmission on the 4 cyl models isnt up to task for wrangler use.Its about 1/2 the size of whats used in the 6 cyls. I know, because when the rio puked up 5th gear at 90K miles they had one of each at the shop where I had the new one installed--that was $1500 in 2002. oh and dont go any older than a '91 no matter what you do. The trannys on the 6 cyl models from '87 to '90 are made by peugot and are equally craptastic and super expensive to replace. They used an aisin-warner unit on4.0's from '91-'99 and its pretty decent. from '00 to about '05 its an NV3500. Which was used on dakotas and rams, even with the small v-8. Its a bit noisy and can be tough to shift in cold weatherbutits pretty strong.

Bottom line is, if mileage is your main concern dont buy a Jeep.That doesnt mean you have to have some total lame weener car like a corolla or cammaccord. A suzuki vitara or chevy tracker is still a truck based 4x4, with true 4wd and a frame but theyre a lot lighter and with smaller engines.

lol ya thats what I always figured with jeeps awsome for rock climbin off-road terrible with gas on road great magnum engines though I luv my 5.2. Ya id never buyone of those ricer rocket cars jezz I see these guys all day with there litte 4cyl engine trying to take me on.
