On the ChargerForums there are a few discussions about how a CAI produces very little if any HP gains.  Biggest gains from an CAI is sound and appearance under the hood.  So this has me wondering if my planned upgrades are really worth the money.

I was planning on the following performance upgrades sometime in 2008
1.  K&N 63 series air charger
2.  Borla T-304 Stainless Steel Cat-Back™ System Aggressive Exhaust
3.  SuperChips Flashpaq Tuner  Part# 3825

I will probably still go with the Borla exhaust for looks and sound.  I am looking for a no bull assesment.  Will the K&N and Borla exhaust actually increase my HP?  What about claims that the K&N filter does not filter all that well and lets dust and grime into the engine.  I dont want to shorten the life of my Hemi!! :)

I hadn't see you posting up in this section until now so welcome.

Yes with the CAI and exhaust you might get 10 hp.

K&N has been in the business a long long time, I believe thier filters work or they wouldn't be in business. I have never see the claims you talk of, can you point to threads or the other source that speak of this issue.

If you not going to mod for HP then the CAI and aftermarket exhaust will not help much.  Stock these cars run around 290HP, once you approach 350+ HP the CAI and exhaust will play a bigger role in producing the bigger numbers.

If you want more power you will need to change all the exhaust.  I have raced people when mine was stock and theirs were no faster...  I got headers, removed the cats and larger exhaust and not one stock Charger can keep up.  I even raced a SRT8 300c with a Borla cat-back and was neck to neck from light to light...   I got the Superchips and the best 0-6 time I got with that was 5.73.  I have never taken it to the track yet...  I wish I had that Superchips when it was stock so I could compare the numbers.

Yes don’t get me wrong there will be a difference. The hp difference of adding catback and stock is marginal but as you climb the hp ladder that difference will increase accordingly and will play a bigger role the grand scheme.

Gutting/removing the CATs is in a whole other category and cosses way over that legal line, don't get cuaght

Real world stuff, no bull, seat of my pants dyno, I did both mods and notice the difference mostly with the addition of the Borla aggressive exhaust.  It is a noticable increase in power just with those two mods.  I did the CAI first and noticed a very small increase in power then I added the exhaust about a month later and noticed a measurable increase in power.  I think you need to do them both to get the full effect of either.  Just my two pennies!

Just wait until you put on headers or a cam, the old seat of the pants dyno is going to go off the scale

OK that was really one source pointing to the duramax numbers.  That was also in an extremely dusty environment not a normal one.  I wish they would rate the filters by the size of particles they will trap normally in microns.

Anyhew, I don’t think it’s fair to call K&N crap <= just my opinion.

I also love the talk of HP gains from CAIs on that thread… don’t believe the published numbers, real gains are marginal.

I dont think K&N is crap..  I am just concerned that if I put on a K&N CAI that I will be subjecting my engine to more dust.

So with the following upgrades I am looking at about 10HP gain?  That is not too shabby :)

1.  K&N 63 series air charger
2.  Borla T-304 Stainless Steel Cat-Back™ System Aggressive Exhaust
3.  SuperChips Flashpaq Tuner  Part# 3825

So what is involved with the instalation of headers and cam and what is the general rough cost.?

Maybe I should have bought an SRT :) (nah....I love my R/T)

Didn't mean to miss quote you on the "K&N crap" statement... my bad.

I did my headers the the hard way with the heads on the engine. I would highly recommend you:
Unbolt the Cats.
Pull the intake (10 bolts) and some other sutff.
Pull the heads with the OEM manifold on them (like 13 bolts each - 8 main ones).
Put on the new headers and torque.
Put the heads back on.
You should invest in a pack of head bolts, 40-50 dollars, because their torqued to yeild (they stretch when put on correctly).

On the cam review this PDF

Is it worth it to upgrade the exhaust in a Daytona R/T?

In my opinion it depends on what you long term plans are.  If you want to go to the track and lay down some low 13s or high 12s then yes eventually upgrade that exhaust.  Right off the bat a CAI and exhaust are not big power adders.

I would say closer to 15HP with those three. 5HP increase from each modd.
