Hello everyone,
New to this forum...a problem already? On a 98 Dakota I have this annoying whine at 45MPH...sounds from the rear. You can hear it slightly at a lower or higher speed but 45 it's quite loud. Maybe I ought to check the fluid? Just got the truck the other day. It was my father-in-laws and kept in great shape. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had a whine coming from the right side,so I turned up the radio. It did not help so I stopped my dakota and told her to get out.
No really, if you have a pinion bearing failing you better check it out right away. Play in the bearing will let the pinion eat the ring gear. Just as a basic check,on level ground in neutral push up and down on the u-joint. There should be 0 play . If you have run it low on oil , the whine could be there for the life of the gear set.

Thanks for the advice, I will check out that pinion bearing! It sounds like a bearing but could be a gear whine. I don't think it's comming from the tires...it's a high pitch sound and it's resonating at exactly 45MPH. Above that or below that slightly it's not there. Oh and, it's only when pressure is on the accelator. When you back off the gas it's not there, even at 45.
