You probably know if it's clogged up with oil and stuff it will not allow air to flow through it, at that point it's bad.

I read the manual and it doesn't mention much about the 5.7s PCV valve.  The inlet hose is in the back of the engine... hard to get to. I guess it could be removed and then you can check the air flow through it.

HardCharger,

It is one of the original "green" earth ideas.  I'm surprised Al Gore didn't say he invented it... LOL.

I wouldn't mess with the PCV (pollution control valve) - they've been on cars since the 60s to evacuate the blow-by (which contains unburned fuel, carbon dioxide, and water vapor) from the crankcase of the engine and to be sucked back through the intake and burned during the combustion process.  The cars in the 50s would just vent all that bad stuff out a tube in the air.  It is one of the reasons SLUDGE is only a bad memory. Like Mango says it'll last a LONG time.  We used to have to clean them up and recalibrate them... (just kidding... it's just a simple ball and cage set up).  But I suppose nowadays it's just a throw away/replaceable part.

MN

Sorry buddy but PCV valve stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve Not Pollution control valve. How do i know this to be true, Cause I'm ASE certified in Automotive Parts, and i have 5 years of Automotive Parts Experience.

What it does is basicly what you said it does, it reroutes some of the gasses from the Crank back into the engine. But you really should change them every 6 to 9 thousand miles not 35 thousand.

Most people dont really care about their cars and they seem to have the most information about what needs to be fixed on other peoples cars, im not calling anyone on here stupid, just be cautious of your sources of info.

Interesting 6-9K replacement, I'm big time over due at over 30K.

Do you have any idea Majin_Neon_00 if there is a valid test for the PCV valve or is a just replace it thing.

Pollution control valve is another definition for the acronym PCV, one of them tomato-tomato things depending on the school and time period of learning <= most of us are shade tree mechanics . Just to keep the peace all of us can probably agree its a one way valve that allows blowby out with no backflow.

Most people use the rattle test, if it still rattles its good, but i really dont go by that, if there is oil on the bottom of the PCV valve then there is oil inside the pcv valve, so as a rule i change it ever two to three oil changes. Anyways it helps with your idle keeps it nice and smooth, or as smooth as it will get. It also effects gas millage so thats another reason i change it so often, and seeing as how they are normally cheap to replace there is no reason not to.

Which brings me to remind everyone that even though antifreeze says it will last 150,000 miles you should still replace it every 30k to 35k, and remember to check your hoses and that your Transmission fluid needs to be changed every 60k or the second time you replace your antifreeze you should replace your transfluid. and dont forget at 60k to change your rear diff fluid also (you charger owners.) Use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube, makes cars happy.

I use only Mobil products with the exception of K&N air and Oil Filters.

And to the rumor of K&N air filters being no good, remember F1 cars use K&N filters, and everyone wishes they had A HEMI so keep it clean!

Thanks for the helpful information.  How can you tell when the PCV valve is rattling?  Is this something it does while the car is on?

No doubt about the anti-freeze/engine coolant change time.  I have around 30k on mine and the antifreeze/coolant is a rusty color.  According to the owner's manual its time to change it out.

I believe you would pull the valve off and give it the old shake test.

PCV cost me $34 and some change today at a Dodge dealer, the only place I could find a PCV valve for the 5.7L Hemi in my area.  Even the friendly tech guy gasped at the cost.  WTF!  I guess I'm gonna have to start slinging dope again...

Majin_Neon_00, I should be spending an extra $34 every two to three oil changes?

A better test would be to remove the hose and hold your finger over the hole while someone starts the engine. If it is pulling a good vacuum at idle, the valve is operating normally. If there is very little or no vacuum, the valve is clogged or stuck and needs replacement. A shot of carb cleaner through the valve might free it up and make it operational again but I would use that only as a stopgap until I could get a replacement. I would also look into any oil residue that you would see on the underside of the valve. The old ones were in the valve covers where oil would splash on them but this one appears to be mounted on the intake where there shouldn't be any oil slinging around. There might a little oil residue where the hose attached but not a thick gooey coating.
