Default 4.0 six

I'm looking for a older 2000+ grand Cherokee as a 2nd mode of transport, the base cherokee is two small for me.
My question is , will the stright six get better mileage than V/8 options for the year? and did the 6 ever come equiperd with a Manual trans?
I don't need the 360 or 318, I have the hemi in my 06 Ram and thiers a lot untapped h/p in the 4.9, I just want a 2nd car to run arround in when not using the Ram for work.

My 00 4.0 got me around 16.5MPG, the V8 is not much different, get the V8. The 4.0 is also VERY noisy.

There's a lot of untapped potential in the 4.9 what? You got an older Mustang kicking around too?

The 4.0 only gets about 1mpg better than the 4.7. Just get the 4.7 and you'll be able to get good mileage and still have plenty of power. 1993 was the only year that Grand Cherokees came with a manual tranny at all, and good luck finding one of those.

We have an 00 Grand Cherokee and love it; the I-6 very smooth, (not noisy) easy to work on and we get 18.3 mpg per the trip computer which we find accurate. Our JGC is RWD. BUT- we also have a Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4.7 with auto trans and RWD and we get 20.3 mpg from it with the trip computer (that is all highway, the JGC figure is mixed city/highway) And the 4.7 is noticeably a lot faster.

If you are looking at a 2000+ Grand Cherokee you will not have to worry about ending up with a 318 or 360. The 318 and 360 were only available in the first generation Grand Cherokee ('93-'98) and the 360 only available in 1998. Yes, the 242 c.i. will get you a little better fuel economy. Yes, the the 242was available with a manual transmission... only in 1993 though.
