Okay so I swapped out the Stock Plugs for the Autolite 3923's... I checked the service manual to see the gap settings and it said for the V6 to gap them at .35 in... so I did that but after I put all the new plugs in just for $hit$ and Giggles I decided to check the gaping on the Stock plugs... now I know that the gap will increase over time through wear and tear...but my truck only has about 20k miles on it and the gap was at .48in... I mean thats .13in gap change in 20k... is it me or should I be worried???

most of the trucks that came from the factory were gapped incorrectly. one plug would correct at .040 and the one nexted to it would be .050 so if all the plugs were gapped the same at .048 then they were all installed wrong. check to see how truck runs over the next couple of days. if it is worse then gap then at .040 if it is better then you made a good choice.

So far the truck is runnin' nice... at first I didn't notice a diff but about a day later... (yesterday) I've noticed that it responds alot better when I push the gas...  so I'm thinkin' I made the right choice...

I just bought a set of Autolite Iridium XP plugs for my 3.7L Dakota and they came gapped at 0.035" which was apparently what they come from the factory according to Autolite, but when I called the dealer to ask what they should be gapped at I was told 0.042"? Anyone know the tolerance range for the gap on the spark plugs?

.035 to .050 isnt going to be a noticable difference in our NA engines.  I would argue that it doesnt matter at all.  Just gap at dealer specs and dont think about it twice.

according to the service manual they should be at .035...  the service manual is what I would go by.  since all the techs are supposed to.

Stick with the service manual, the dealership didn't design your engine.

Thanks for all the input I think I'll go with the .035". I need one of those service manuals, that would help a lot! I think the Haynes one comes out in November.

When I looked the plugs on the 4.7, I was a little confused about the whole wiring bit and stayed away from buying any new plugs for a while.

Well I just downloaded the service manual and checked the spark plug gap again, looks like the dealer was right. The service manual calls for .042" gap for the 3.7L and a .040" gap for the 4.7L. I'm not exactly sure one way or another exactly how critical the gap is being that the spark plug gapping tools are not going to accurately get you to thousandths of an inch, it seems to me like its more of a close enough game, I guess I'll find out soon!

The service manual I had said .35in... are you sure it said .42 for a 3.7L??

Dakota Stone... what wiring are you refering to about the spark plugs....??

I downloaded the service manual in the forum and that's what it says to do, the ignition system is on pgs 1030-1050 there it tells you how much to gap the plugs, what to torque them at and how to remove the ignition coils to get to the plugs.

I think all the confusion is coming from this part that shows the gap tool and a plug being gapped at 0.35:

But, the actual specs are:
