Hello everyone, I have a question about the K&N intakes, I've been looking to see which would be the best one for my car, 07 R/T 5.7L, so far I like K&N, only problem is, they have 2 different options, call me stupid but I dont know what the difference is or what they do. I know they have that regular cold air intake, the short blast cold air intake and the typhoon, can someone please explain to me the difference? Thanks in advance!

I will chime in as well with a question if that is ok...

What is the difference between the models mentioned and the kits from MOPAR and the generics on Ebay??

Great question by the way.

I never understood why K&N doesn't differentiate the two CAIs they have for the 5.7. As you know their basically the same but there are slight differences.

FIPK: three sided insulated enclosure, Single black plastic tube (will probably flow better than a multi piece tube).

Typhoon: Two sided non-insulated enclosure,  not sure what material is used on the tube and it has a rubber elbow. The filter is slightly larger at the end than the FIPK.

Their HP ratings are unrealistic so realistically look to get a few HP out of either of them.

You can buy parts and make what is called a FrankenTake, a homemade CAI for a little over 100.00.  I run one of these homemade FrankenTakes and am happy with it. This type of CAI is comparable with the Typhoon.

So it doesn't really matter which one I go with? Since the HP isn't much different and they all pretty much do the same thing? Sounds like I might get a little more with the typhoon though.
I've never heard of that Frankentake but it sounds like a good idea and a money saver, thanks for the info and the tip!

I looked up the filter of each and the typhoon was larger & you would think the larger filter would give better flow.  K&N lists the HP of the other one as being greater and it might be due to the one piece elbow/tube.

All in all it's a wash in my book... go with the lower priced one

I would strongly suggest the AFE over the K&N but if you must go K&N, Definitely go with the Typhoon.... Remember the K&N Pipe is so small, that it can fit inside the AFE Pipe!!!

AFE - 54-10712 Intake System

Just my 2 centavos... If money was no object I would get an Air Hammer.  The Hammer's shape is the same as afe Stage II (note that's a afe stage II because they have another model) but the material used is much better.

True on the Air Hammer.... Just suggesting AFE as a nationally known company where you can get recharge kits almost anywhere..

So out of the AFE, K&N, and the Air Hammer, the Air Hammer would be the best one to go with? And I'm still a little confused on the "short ram" thing. Can someone explain that to me?

Yes Hammer that Air

Short = no good; long = good. The longer the tube will provide more suction, combine that w/a funnel and you get a vacuum vortex effect pulling more air. That's as sientific as I can and want to get with that topic  maybe someone can post up the quantum mathematics behind all that

Thanks for posting that link, MangoINTX !

Clicking on through all the links leads to some interesting dyno testing.

That group of volunteers
have a new set of air intake dyno tests
including one on a design called the 'Air Hammer'
which uses a very large SB brand name cone style air filter
to get the total restriction down to about 2 inches of water
where a 7.6 hp rear wheel dyno gain was found
compared to a stock factory 300C 5.7 Hemi airbox and filter.

http://tinyurl.com/2spygu

It is good to see air intake testing improving to the point where people are measuring the total restriction using a manometer.  So much can be learned with a simple clear plastic tube and some water.

This thread has a better than average
"Mods Face Off Testing Methodology Q&A"
where the give details of how they test.

The only detail I quibble with
is not using enough electric fans in front of the vehicle to get at least
somewhat near vehicle speed and leaving the hood up during the dyno run....their way only uses an electric fan in front of the radiator when on the dyno to keep the engine from over-heating during the short 'inertial' run.

They need another two electric fans at a cost at Home Depot of about $130 each to get windspeed over the vehicle to something like 60 mph with the hood closed.

The Ram Pickup 5.7 Hemi stock factory airbox and filter inside is about 20%
bigger than a 300C so the gain might not be as much.

The dyno graph of five air CAI's dyno tests together is at:
