Hello Everyone.  I am a new Charger R/T owner and need to take my car in for the 3,000 mile oil change.  I know a TSB says the 5.7L MDS engine MUST have SAE 5W-20 oil, but how to make sure this is what is put into the car?  Owners Manual says to take the car to the selling dealer, but I have been told by an expert on JustAnswer.com that another dealer in the Denver area would be a better place to take the car.  Anyone have any experience or ideas about this?  Thanks.  I appreciate any thoughts you have.

If you’re not going to change the oil yourself and want to verify the type of oil used you better watch them as they poor it in. You can take a sample of the oil and have it tested but that’s extreme and probably costly.

If you have a recommendation for a particular dealership and you don’t have any issues with that, go with the recommendation.

Black Charger R/T,

I had the first few oil changes done by my dealer and had the same reservations you have.  On my last servicing I decided to go with an old mechanic friend of my father's.  The car feels better now that I've gone with him. I don't notice a lot of little engine noises as I did before and Jr. seems to be running a lot smoother now.  Just a thought.  In the end you just have to go with what makes you most comfortable.  I know this, I'm staying away from those dealers, they're more expensive and from my experience they didn't do what needed to be done.

Good ideas.  I read where some dealers put 10W-30 or 40 in these cars; I had to take the car in on Friday because it looked like it was a quart low on oil.  I think I lucked out.  I just walked in and said I would like to watch them change the oil and they said OKAY!  However, they put oil using one of those overhead gizmos that is like a pulldown hose so who knows what goes in there.  Wish I had someone I knew to take it to.  I'll keep looking.  Thanks very much for replying.  I appreciate it.

Black Charger,
Just maybe a simpton way to check is to see if your MDS kicks in after the oil change -- if it does, you probably have the correct vescosity.  If not, you don't.  I have had my oil changed by three different dealers, mainly because I took my baby on a long trip and I faithfully change oil and filter every 3,000 miles using Mopar Semi-Synthetic.  The MDS has worked every time.  I also not only rotate my tires every 6,000 miles, I also have them balanced then.  Over kill?  It rides so smooth I think I'm in a Caddy .  LOL.

I will take it out and see if the MDS kicks in.  Didn't even think of that.  Thanks.  Is synthetic oil better than conventional oil for the R/T?  Have you seen that commercial advertising Castrol Synthetic oil where there are two Chargers (no markings to indicate they're Chargers, but it's obvious) one is red and one is black?  They're running them at high speed on some kind of roller facing each other.  It's a commercial for Castrol synthetic oil, so the red car using conventional oil craters in.  But it is advertising 5W-30 and using Chargers?  Maybe they're not R/Ts but the black one has a spoiler on the back so I'm thinking it has to be an R/T with Road and Track or an SRT 8.  When I took it in I asked them if they put 7 quarts in it AND an oil filter.  I watched them and they changed the filter.  Checked the oil - and it's at the top of the Safe level so I think they did.  Thanks very much for answering.  All this helps me a lot.

Hey Black Charger what part of the Denver area are you in?  I'm in Aurora.  Can you give a clue as to what dealer you should or shouldn't go to?

I live in South Denver so I took the car to the dealer on Arapahoe Road - great experience since they have an Express bay area where it's first come, first served and you can watch them work either by being in the work area or in a waiting room with a window onto the work area.  The one that I had concerns about is the same named dealer but Southwest - nothing specific, just general comments.  That's where I bought it because I got a great deal!  There's another dealer up North with that direction in its name (how am I doing on these clues?) that was recommended to me by Dodge Experts.  There's also an independent dealer on Logan St. that was highly recommended.  Let me know if you want that name and I'll e-mail it to you.  Where have you taken yours and did you get great service?

I checked if the MDS was working after the oil change because another post thankfully told me that if it wasn't working, probably did not get right viscosity (5W-20).  It's working Great so I'm happy!

Black Charger, thanks for the info.  My first oil change was at the dealer on Arapahoe and I got good service from them too. My second was at a quick lube place by my house (but they are really good and you can watch them do everything).  I need my third now, which I will probably do myself.  I have had the car 2 months and am on my 3rd oil change.  I bought my car at the dealer on Havana.  Only went there because they had they car we wanted will all of the options we wanted.  And got a really good deal.

Wish I could change the oil in my car - I would.  Glad I could help.  I just read the post about 0W-20.  The TSB says MUST use 5W-20 and so does the owner's manual.  Is there something I don't know?  Thanks.

I'm not positive but I think the 6.1L uses 0W-20.
