Screw the mileage, give me the hp!

The government really ought to stay out of this, did they ever consider their gas mileage requirements would hurt american companys more because we make and sell a lot more large trucks and suvs?

I agree the government needs to stay out of this, and pretty much everything else it has its hands into.  But who's to blame for that? We are.  Instead of demanding  high hp, stylish cars like challengers and mustangs, and bad ass 4x4s like Wranglers and Rams, the non-enthusiast sheep majority of people out there will lay over and buy the high mileage, 2 cyl weenie cars.  Its sad, really.  It'd be no big deal to shoot this legislation down, if the big 3 would just band together.  They have the power and influence to lobby this sort of thing right out the window.  All they have to do is say it cant be done and thats that.  What're they gonna do, shut down 3 of the largest employers in the country and in the process screw themselves out of publicly owned vehicles like cop cars, and rescue vehicles? I dont think so.

The tree huggers have more power in the Democratic Congress right now than the auto makers.....and they evidently have more $$ to lobby with as well.

Well, frankly I was never too thrilled about some Chrysler Imperial aimed at the blue hair market. I never quite got on the 300C bandwagon either. To me, the 300C looked like a good design that someone tried to parallel park and them repeatedly rammed the front and back. And weren't classic Imperials big funky looking stodgy old grandpa-mobiles? Challenger Yes! Imperial...eh! If they want to bring back a sedan, then bring back the Road Runner. Preferrably a '69/'70 retro version.

Fuel COSTS are also to blame the the scrapping of the Imperial.

It was ugly anyway...

The Imperial was pointless considering it's pretty much a luxury 300C or poor man's Bently. Just offer a luxury option for the 300 and Chrysler's set.

Imperials and Lincoln Towncars are dinosaurs of the automotive industry.  They need to go........

The suicide rear doors are a good idea tho.  In fact anything that makes a car less of a traditional 4 door sedan is a good thing, IMHO.

I am all for Congress in lending a helping hand to aid in the developement of higher MPG cars.  But to mandate that ALL cars meet at least 35 MPG is just silly.  There should be a tax break or something to make the average everyday car 35MPG or better.  Trucks and performance cars should have improved MPG but not mandated if the HP is not there.

I was excited to hear about the Imperial until I learned it is a upscale 300.......redundant.  BTW....I like the 300...classy car.

Congress should stop enforcing new MPG requirements on automakers, and force gas price capping on oil companies.  Here is the problem:
Oil companies provide large donations to congressional politicians campaign accounts (AKA kickbacks).  There is even some under the table money, or should we say in the freezer money (Louisianna State Rep) that is being passed around.  Since the politicans can not bite the hand that feeds them, they have to pass the cost off to someone else, the automakers.  Unfortunately, the cost always comes back to the consumer because of technology.  If they would just limit the price of gas per gallon to .99 again, everything would be alright, for us that is.

Crude Oil closed today one penny short of it's all time high.  If this continues.....it will ruin the economy.  I do agree that the oil companies should be held accountable.  I am all in favor of companies making a profit....but record profits!!!! (not revenue but actual profit) based on price gouging is not right.!!
