White is usually antifreeze that is getting in the combustion chamber. Usual culprit is a head gasket. If the rings were bad, ususally you will see blue smoke - oil that is blowing past the rings and getting into the combustion chamber. If you know someone who has a shop or someone who has equipment that would be willing to help you out, there is an easy test. Use a CO sniffer and put it in the radiator neck (remove the cap). If it smells CO, head gasket problem. Good luck.
