About 3 months ago, I wanted to test out the Ebay ones and paid about $40 shipped. After about a month of researching on them (the brand I got was BOMZ) showed that theyd slam your neon about an inch from the ground...and thats if youre lucky.
The stock springs you have are about 11 inches tall if youd take them off andset them on the garage floor or driveway. The Ebay ones (fully extended) are about 6-7 inches. Thats almost half. combine that with the cheap tension that they have and "viola!" you got a car that bottoms out when you get in!
Coilovers are a lot harder to install than new springs. The cutting and welding them on just kinda made me lose interest in the whole project of the installation. Just google search "DIY coilover installation" in google and you'll get everything you could ever want to know.
But, if you do wanna go with em, do it. Its almost worth the $40 for the experience. But I suggest saving for a nice set (usually in the $500- $800range or maybe even lower) or just treating yourself to someSKUNK 2's or Ebachs. Also, 1st Generation springs will work on 2nd Gens, they just lower them about 1 inch more than what they say.
Oh, I almost forgot. There is a ultra cheap way that I thought of for lowering your car. And when I say cheap, I mean like 99 cents per wheel (keep in mind that I dont really know if it is good for your springs, but if youre gonna buy newones down the road anyway, you might as well try it [&:]).
What you do is go find about 4-8of those metal clamps that you can tighten the rubber connectors that connect your CAI pipes together and then go jack up the front drivers side tire.
You might wanna take the tire off, but you really dont have to.
Make sure you've got it jacked high enough that the spring is compressed to where you want it.
Simply untighten the metal clamp with a screwdriver, loop it around the top and bottom of the spring.
Tighten it like you've never tightened anything before... like a madman...
Do the same to the other end of the spring.
Repeat with all four tires.
Ive had mine on for about two days, and I really havent noticed thestiffer ride
too much. It really hits you when you speed over train tracks though... cheap thrill, eh?
Now,I strongly suggest using 2 on each spring, 'cause I dont know what their limit is at... and I really dont wanna be aroundwhen mine decide to kick the bucket... I know this is probably the most ghetto thing youve ever heard, but this is coming from a poor engineering student who has no cash
Oh well, hope this helps ya.
