Default Performance Increase

Ok, I realize this is basically a bump of all of the other performance posts that have been done on this forum, and I've read just about all of them, but most of them are almost a year old. I've seen you guys go back and forth on stacked Jet Chip + SC flashpaq, then (was it one of the banana's?) that switched to mopar performance parts, etc...

So, now that the car has been out for just about 2 years, I would just like to see an update to what everyone has done to their cars and how they like it. I've managed to leave mine stock because my wife thinks it will ultimately raise the value of the car, much like a classic car. I've managed to steer her away from that ideology and want to put between $500 - $1000 into performance upgrades. Specifically the CAI (mopar or K&N?), the Jet Chip II (is this still worth the money?--stage I with these upgrades?), and a pair of headers. I know with all of that I'm pushing the $1000 limit, but it seems that that setup provides a novel performance boost (40 hp?), while still keeping fair fuel economy.

Also, one thing I haven't seen... has anyone bothered putting an X-pipe on it, or is this done already in the suitcase?

I appreciate ya'lls time you've put into this forum... Thanks!

A chip, intake, and headers will not get you 40HP I wish though . I have added to my charger and intake, and teh superchip and I think thats all I need cause my charger moves pretty well for only $550.

They would get you 40hp at the crank but not at the wheel

baldyloxs is right, you'll get maybe 20 HP with a CIA/Tuner/Header combo. All these things come into play withother performance mods you do to the car.

Heck get in the fast lane andslap a ZEXnitrous kit and accessories on that baby. This will add form 75 to 100 HP right out of the box, well almost, after you get the bottle filled You can nickle and dime the CIA/TUNER/Headers later.

Kit (bottle, switch, nozzle, pills and associated stuff) 82177
Traction Control Window Switch 82085
Racers Kit (guage, bottle heater, blowdown tube) 82001

Who really knows... 20 hp, 40hp, 100 hp, most of us don't have a dyno, nor, spend the time to change something then run it each time... ok.If you go to High Horse Performance and look at their posts, they say a Stage 1 cam (that can be used with MDS) will give you 40 hp, but in small print, it was also dynoed WITH full headers,SC programmer, and a CAI. Mango uses a Zex (brand) NOS set up that gives you 75 to 125 HP on a stock motor (75 HP for stock tuningrecommended). I have a Jet 2 chip and a K&Nseries 63 CAI, and can push the ESP button and frythe back tires, and she runs a 14.07.It's not a ground-pounder but I like getting25 MPG on the road. But, dollar for dollara NOS is the best value: for around $1,000 you can have a "killer" set up with a window switch(tells thesystem towhen to come on and off). Or you can do the old fashioned way: Stage One cam (260 dur - 500 lift);shorty headers, high flow cats, SC tuner, anda CAI for about $3,000 and have added around 40 HP. Hmm. See? Stage two would be a bigger cam andsprings, MDS delete, full flow exhaust, SC programmer, CAI, and maybe a high speed torque converter: now your looking at 70 HP, for $4,500+ but how's the driveability of your car with that loping cam? See, Mango has it pegged: slap on a NOS andjust when you need it you've got 75 instant HP; otherwise, enjoy the extra fuel savings from the MDS! Lifeis good...

Ok... so I get what you are saying. I like the fuel efficient 25 MPG and there is no way in hell the wife will let me put Nitrous in the car (we're just about to have a baby in July)... so that leaves me with the SC/CAI/Header...

Problems I see with that...
SC = $565
CAI (AFE Stage II - 82177) = $300
Header (Hedman Shorty Headers-Ceramic- HED-78586-STR) = $500

So, unless I can find some much better deals, I'm looking SOL. Any ideas? ...anyone looking to sell their SC tuner?

Realistically:
A SC is going to cost roughly 360 new (you should be able to find one used and it will be cheaper)
A CAI 300 is going top of the line or make your own for 100+/-.
Shorty Headers (jet coated) 500. <= who is going to install this?

My kid (7 now) and me (the big kid) loves the nitrous, it's a rush when it hits and plants you into the seat partly kidding here because it probably will not work in your situation. If done right it's is safe/cheap and completes the HP goal your looking for.

<edit> Forgot to say, congrats on the expected new one! I think the answer is obvious but Imust ask, your first?

First - congratulations on the baby! I'll ask too - your first?

Now, I've got an '06 R/T. I've put a Magnaflow full cat back exhaust (should NOT have put the Magnaflow on it - should have spent a little more and gotten something different); I have the MP CAI and the SC programer. I had the JET Stage 2 before the SC, and, at one time, had them stacked. I've since taken the JET chip out. I recently de-tuned the SC from 91 octane to 87. I could not believe the difference in performance, or gas mileage. With the car in full tune, i.e., 91 octane, I could get anywhere between 26 and 28 mpg. De-tuned to 87, I barely achieved 25, and usually the best I could do was 24. I only left it that way for 3 days; I've gone back to the 91 octane tune. Yeah, it was over $1,000, but well worth it IMHO.

74scamp and MangoInTX: Yes, it'sour first.. a baby girl... I know I'm starting a little soon, but I've got to make sure my car is fast enough to catch those @#$%@# boys that try to touch her [:@]

I might be able to do a nitrous system when the kid(s) get older, but right now it just freaks my wife out... she's watched the Fast & the Furious too many times.

I keep hearing people swear by the SC tuners, particularly that you can notice the difference in shifting. I might check the classifieds in the OKC area and see if I can find one cheap. As far as who is going to install the headers... I was going to tackle this project. I'm military and we get use of an Auto Hobby shop that only costs $2/hr to use a lift (or like $8/day) and I work with a few people who have done it before. I've done exhaust welding before, but never attempted to replace an exhaust manifold. Is this a good idea or should I fork out the money to have someone else do it? I used to be an Aircraft Mechanic... surely a $36k car is easier to work on then a $1.2B airplane

I had my first and last kid when I was 40 (please don't do the math ), your doing the right thing starting young. They will wear you down quick

Your going down the normal path with CAI, headers &Tuner. All those itemswill work well on the car and eventually will add up the HP. A couple of us have done the header install and I have a PDF on the install that is a good guide, not an end all but will let you know what's in store. I'll PM with a link to the PDF.

Here's a little pic I tookafter installing the purge valve this evening

<edit> looks like it's spraying off centeron the passanger side, that will be tweaked [&:]
