Default 5.2 to 5.9 Engine Swap

I currently have the 5.2 in a 4x4 durango with ported heads, cam, roller rockers, etc. It's due for a rebuild so I'm putting in a 5.9. I know the heads, cam, etc is interchangeable. I was wondering if the motor mounts, oil pan, and flywheelare the same? And the trans should bolt up with no problems...right? Thanks

I know the 318 and 360 LA series engines were different in the way they were balanced. IE the 318 was internally balanced and the 360 was external, or vice versa. So you will have to at least change tourque converters or flexplates. At one point I know that B&M had a flex plate specific for putting a 360 where a 318 was.

Buy another D it will cost you way too much to do the swap. You can bolt up the transmission but it will not be able to handle the power that the 360 puts out and will leave you stranded at some point in time. You would have to reflash the PCM and the dealer will not flash a PCM for an engine swap because it would require a different VIN (from a 5.9) to get the most power (that a factory tune offers) out of the engine. Do yourself a favor and save the headache and wasted $$$ and just buy a 360 D then you'll have 2 toys instead of one...

I think the reason he probably wanted to go with the 5.9 is because the wiring harness would work for him. Am I right?

I was considering a 5.7 hemi at one time but I just had my trans professionally built and added a shift kit/stall convertor.(I don't think the 44re will bolt up to it) And I already have ported heads, cam, roller rockers, etc that will bolt right on to the 5.9. A stock 5.9 only has 245hp and 335 lb. tq. I'm definately not worried about the 5.9 putting out too much power for my trans! My little 5.2 had 280+hp. I'm probably going to geta 5.9 shortblock in a few weeks.(alot cheaper than another durango!) I guess I'll find out if the 5.2 oil pan and flywheel will work on it when I get it.

Ditto MG.

Buy another D and sell yours. It is too much to swap from one motor to another that don't match.

The 5.2 uses a neutral balance damper and flexplate. The5.9 is externally balanced. I just need a new damper & flexplate for the 5.9. I found out the rest will work, everything else matches.[/align]

if he's doing the work himself, how does it cost tomuch? maybe if you were to lazy and took it somewhere yeah it would be pricey, but doing it yourself shouldn't cost more then 1-2k 4k max in my opinion, how is that more expensive then a new truck?

Do what you want. We have told you electrical/PCM isn't going to work without MEGA time, costs, labor, effort.

I'll buy your motorless Durango for $1000 when your done
