I have a very intermittant problem with my 2002 Durango R/T. (5.9). This happens about once a week and I drive every day. I get a heavy whooshing noise like a fan, and either my Durango will not go anywhere at all, or will feel like it is slipping terribly. Then the trans engages after about a couple of minutes of this and no problems for awhile. I had a complete trans service two weeks ago. They found no code issues, and said it looked good. Obviously it is not. It is still covered under the Dodge 8 year/80,000 mile warranty.

Does it need a new trans or what?? I tried my best to describe the problem to the local dealership when I took it in two weeks ago. They obviously could not duplicate this problem during a 20 minute test drive.

Thanks people!

Does it only happen when colded or sits over nite ? If it does you may have a drain back problem. Thats where fluid drain back into the torque converter. If this is what you are feeing let the truck warm up a little longer before driving.

I have had it happen directly after starting up, and I have also witnessed this after driving for an hour or more.I cannot identify a real pattern as to when it will happen. What is weird is the noise, it sounds like a very loud fan.

I was thinking maybe if it was anywhere other than a dealership they might not have put in ATF + 4 but n/m that. So basically something is not engaging. Did they adjust the bands? Sorry I'm no tranny mechanic.
