I have a lame question for you all that run synthetic oil in your vehicles.  Do you still change your oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months?  I put Castrol Syntec 5W-20 with the MOPAR oil filter and I do mine around 4 to 5,000 miles.  I don't make it to the 3 month period, I put the miles on this car cause I love to drive it!!!  Any input from you all would be great.  Thanks for you time.

Mike

I do mine every 3 months still,if I could get over 3,000 miles in the 3 months I would when the time was up.I only do it then cause we all know it may draw some moisture, and thats not good .

Ouch, if I had to pay $125 a pop I don't know if my oil would ever be changed!  I pay $45+/- for 7 quarts of synthetic and then $6 for the filter and do it myself.  I found it was way cheaper for me to do it myself.  The first oil change I took it to the dealer and had them do it.  3 hours and $50 bucks later, it was synthetic blend.  So I decided I should do it myself.  I put a boat load of miles on my car.  Bought it Jan 2, picked it up from the dealer Jan 5 with 127 miles on it.  I just turned 10,000 miles the other night.  That's right, 10,000!  I have an 80 mile round trip drive to work.

Thanks for your info guys.

I do mine every 3-4 months regardless of mileage with Mobil 1 from Wally World.  A 5 quart jug is less than $24, so with a filter it comes to about $30.......

Morfoot,
There is more to the story than just cost.  Oil is supposed to lubricate, help cool, and carry bad particles to the filter.  Old school teachers told us to change oil often, using 3,000 miles as a benchmark.  Now, oil is better and can go longer between changes -- but do you want to?  If I put in $7 a quart Royal Purple and change it every 3,000 miles, I'd go broke.  If I change just the filter every 3,000 miles and add a fresh quart, it's not as bad.  Some people change the filter twice (3,000 and 6,000 miles) then at 9,000 change it all and start over.  Sludge used to be a problem, but with better engines and better oil additives that isn't a common problem anymore -- and, of course, we change it more than once a year.  So, who knows.  It's like living longer -- everyone has a theory, but it boils down mostly to genetics anyway.  So, use good oil and a good filter and do your own thing!

Thanks everyone...I just changed my oil yesterday.  I love hearing what everyone has to say about how they do things.  Love this forum.

So what is better?  Synthetic or normal oil?  I am halfway between my fist oil change.  I currently have just over 1600 miles on my 07 RT that I bought on 7/7/07 with 47 miles on it.

2000,
From what I have read and observed, synthetic is the better lubricator.   It's slipperyier, flows readily in the cold, adheres better to metal thereby reducing friction at start ups, but also has a higher heat tolerance and is more stable than normal oil.  But the trade off is cost.
Whatever you use, be sure to keep it clean.  Keep your air cleaner clean and change oil often (I use the 3,000 mile schedule B) and avoid dusty conditions (gravel roads) if you can.

Also, keep your engine bay clean, but keep any water from getting into your oil from the dip stick or filler cap.

When you had 777 miles on your 2007 Charger you bought on 7/7/07 -- did you get a picture?  LOL.  Just teasing...

My Charger just had it's first oil change.....is this like auto puberty now :)

Brought it to a local respected garage that I have had other cars worked on before.   Put in Mobil 1 5w-20 7 qts and they charged me $77.00!!

We just traded in the wife's 2005 Chrysler Pacifica for an 2005 Dodge Magnum RT (she needed the Hemit power after driving mine).  I will still use Mobil 1 but will do it myself instead.
