Replacing Fuel Injector - 5/8/2007 3:29:22 PM

I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but more so on the older non-computer motors.  Has anyone replaced a fuel injector in a 1st gen Intrepid?  I was getting a #1 cylinder misfire..........after unplugging other injectors and noticing a difference, and no difference was indicated when I plugged power to the #1 injector or it was unhooked, I am guessing an injector replacement is due.

What are the steps of replacing an injector in one of these?  Any comments would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Just by unplugging the wire you can't determine if the problem is the injector.  The wire to the injector may be open.  I'd check that first.  Also, I think there was a recall for the fuel rail on the 1st gen.  Has it been done?  If not, you may get a free repair.

I should have stated that I did just replace both the plugs and the wires, and it has spark.  So has to be a fuel delivery problem to #1.  I will check the fuel rail and see how that goes, then move on to the injector.  Thanks for the guidance, I appreciate it.

Lee,

Do you know if the following recall was done on your car?

FUEL:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM

Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles built with 3.5L engines. The fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing O-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire. Dealers will replace the fuel rail O-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. Vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector O-rings

It is possible that the #1 fuel injector o ring is defective and leaking gas.

Also note that if the car is not drivable or if it can be down for a while you could remove the injectors and send them in to be cleaned (I may do this on my car's injectors):

Complete Flow Test and Cleaning.............................$16.00 per injector + actual return shipping.
