95ES Trans/Speedo problem - Help! - 4/30/2007 12:54:20 AM    flynnbig5   Posts: 4 Joined: 4/30/2007 Status: offline Hello, I have a 95ES Intrepid that is acting different than the standard trans problems I have read about. The speedo registers about 50MPH while you are idling in park. The speed increases with engine RPM, until you get to about 110MPH (still in park) and the engine begins to go into some sort of  "limiting" engine cutout mode. The speedo will return to 0MPH when the car in put into any gear (rev,drive, etc.). In drive, the car is in "limp mode" locked in second gear. Have already replaced both speed sensors and the Trans control module. Any body got any Ideas???????????????? I would really appreciate any input!! Thanks Don Post #: 1

RE: 95ES Trans/Speedo problem - Help! - 4/30/2007 4:49:52 PM    kurts2   Posts: 591 Joined: 10/27/2006 Status: offline You said you changed the TCM?  If so, I belive a re-learn needs to be accomplished.  This must be done with a $3,000 scann tool, and therfore by a quailfed shop.  Was this done?  If not, it may be he cause.  It would help to know the history, ie when you changed part #1 and why, what happened next ect. otherwise it's just a guessing game.  I'd also make sure you have the connectors for the speed input/output sensors on the proper sending units.  Also could be shorted signal wires as I belive speed output and engine RPM shouldn't be related. The car was fine until it went into "limp mode" after approaching a stop light. While in "limp mode" the speedometer would operate very erratic (bounce around at higher speeds than the car was actually going). At that point I changed the input and output speed sensors. The same result , bouncing speedo and "limp mode". At that point I tried the TCM. Now the speedo is at the point I described in the original post. Is the  re-learn you talked about the same as a "calibration". I read a post that someone had to have the tranny re-calibrated after they changed the computer (wasn't sure if that was do to a change in tire size, or the actual computer). RE: 95ES Trans/Speedo problem - Help! - 4/30/2007 5:32:11 PM    kurts2   Posts: 591 Joined: 10/27/2006 Status: offline Yes, it's called the "transaxle quick learn procedure."  You need a DRB scan tool to accomplish this and I'm not sure how the car will act untill it has been done.  The TCM may have fixed the original malfunction, if not (after the quick learn), you may have a PCM issue.  A shop with the DRB scan tool will also be able to run a diagonistic on the auto to figure out what is going on.  Good luck' Kurt (in reply to flynnbig5) Post #: 4

If the output wire is shorted to the input wire,then you would RPM in park. (in reply to kurts2) Post #: 5

Is there another point under the battery that a connector would be located? The local Dodge dealership said they had not heard of my symptoms being cause for the TCM requiring a re-cal. He did say that a re-cal would be necessary for the transmission to shift properly. Looks like a re-cal and then see what happens. Thanks for all your time and input!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All you need to do is look for battery acid around the wire harness under the battery. I have been with dodge since 1989. (in reply to flynnbig5) Post #: 7

RE: 95ES Trans/Speedo problem - Help! - 5/10/2007 2:26:17 AM    flynnbig5   Posts: 4 Joined: 4/30/2007 Status: offline Master Tech, Does it make sense that replacing the trans computer (without a re-cal) could cause the symptoms I have described?  I could not see any corrosion on the wiring harness or connector for the TCM. I am concerned that this is a very simple fix, but it is not simple (or economical) to narrow down the cause of the problem. It has been my experience that it is easier for the repair facilities to start replacing components until they fix the problem. This is ok when you are under warranty, but not when I am footing the bill. Thanks for your input. (in reply to master tech) Post #: 8

RE: 95ES Trans/Speedo problem - Help! - 5/10/2007 2:11:58 PM    kurts2   Posts: 591 Joined: 10/27/2006 Status: offline Did you ever check that you put the correct connectors on the proper sending units?  You may also have dammaged the wires to the sensors (this is where you may have a short if not under the bat tray).
