Default Lousy milage

Hi,

I just bought my first Dodge, it's a 1999 Durango,4x4 with a 5.9 with 70,000 miles. I really like the Durango but, do all Dodges use this much gas. I'm gettin 9 mpg. What's the deal.....

No, durangos should atleast be getting 15 mpg. I personally, if it were mine, would take it to a mechanic...

Welcome to the 5.9 club. The cars dont get very good gas mileage. Are you going by what a computer read out is giving your or have you averaged the miles you get to a full tank. I know that my little computer thing tells me i get 12 miles to the gallon but when i run it from full to empty i get about 16 miles to the gallon by using the odometer. The worst is around town driving, any time the car is under 50 it is drinking gas.

I have a 1998 Durango SLT with the 5.2 and I only get between 12 and 13 mpg. Don't feel too bad about the 9 mpg.

Good God! That seems pretty bad to me. My Roadrunner averages 7.5 mpg, but thats because it's a mildly built 440 and not always keeping my foot out of it. No matter how heavy the Durango is it should be better than that.

You would be suprised and it is really hard to keep your foot off the gas especially in the city at all the stop lights. But i am pretty sure that if you calculate your mile per gallons instead of trusting the computers in the durangos it is about five miles to the gallon better.

My 2003 5.2L gets horrible mileage in town, too. But, on the highwas it does much better. City driving I'm lucky to get 10-11 mpg, Hgy we get almost 25-30mpg.

One thing that doesn't help is the PT Cruiser. Automakers only need to meet an average fuel economy based on the vehicle type. Since the PT Cruiser is classified as a truck it allows them to let the rest of the trucks fuel mileage go to hell and still keep within the fuel economy limitations.
