Hi

I have a 2004 Dakota Quad 4x4 which now has about 3200 miles.

Recently, due to the snow, and also a steep driveway, I switch into 4LO, to get out of the driveway. Once I am up the driveway onto the road, I switch from 4LO to either 4HI or 2HI, but several times over the last few days, when I do this, the light flashes and flashes and flashes, and then after a while the system gives up, and just stays in 4LO.

I do this when the truck is in neutral and stopped, per the manual.

So, then I drive a few hundred yards down the road, and then try it again. Then it seems to work fine.

Is there anything wrong here? I was wondering if the system needs time to warm up, but I can't imagine why.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

it also could be that the extreme cold weather makes the oil "thicken up" and makes it harder to shift. my auto tranny when cold is sluggish to shift.

4 lo can put some real stresses on the tranny, which could be the problem when you want to get out of it.  I would suggest stopping once you are on flat ground, then back up about 10', then forward a few feet, stop, go to neutral, and switch to 4 hi or 2wd.
