Been having a lot of troubles with my 2002 Dakota 4.7 4X4. I started having no heat on idle and plently of heat while driving.
Seems to be sporatic right now.
While cold I opened the radiator cap on the top rad. hose. There was no coolant at all in the hose. (my idea was to burp the system of air) I ran the truck for awhile to see if the coolant would could up to the hose...it didn't.
So i put the rad. cap back on, and drove the truck for awhile to get the circulation going. Then checked the reservoir...which all my coolant level holes had coolant in them (on the stick). So, I believe the reservoir is up to it's required level.
After this I let it cool, then opened the rad. cap again and still no coolant in top hose. Shouldn't I hav e coolant in the hose??
Is it not sucking from the resevoir?
Any suggestions?

how hot is your truck runing...could be a water pump that would be my guess

So what right now, it has not been running for 3 hours, I should be able to go out there now and open the rad. cap on the top hose and there should be coolant in that hose correct??
That being true, if the rad. cap is in place and I run it the coolant should be sucked out of the resevoir and into the radiator, right??
Then why isn't any coolant in the hose at the end

if I'm understanding what your asking you have to have the system full in the first place to siphon out of the resevwar... it sounds like your system isn't full to me...ever siphon say gas...same philosophy

Ok, so right now I go out to my truck which has been sitting for about 4 hours now, I pop the rad. cap on the upper hose, and keep filling that until it's to the top of the filler neck??

Why would my mechanic think there was too much coolant in the reservoir?? I won't be filling it up too much if I fill thru the rad. cap, when the reservoir is full??
