Don't know if it's the best but I use 5w 30 or 40. It's cheaper to buy it by the gallon.

I use 10w-40 Castrol High mileage. I have 150k on my car. It works ok. I would not suggest switching to synthetic oil if the car has alot of miles. Sometimes the switch causes oil leaks.

Synthetic is okay if that's what has been used all along?

Oh yeah, its ok. It is just if a car has alot of miles on it and has always used dino oil, the change can cause some gaskets to leak. I cannot recall if it is the additives in the dino oil or vice versa.

Synthetic is ALWAYS the way to go. If you can, get Amsoil. if the area your living in does not get too cold ( below 30ish much) get the 5W-30 otherwise get 10W-30. Also, check out http://www.micapeak.com/info/oiled.htmlIts well worth the read. Some older engines have leaked when they are high mileage, but usually it's the American engines. The Japanese designs have much higher tolerances i.e. Stealth’s & Mitsubishis. If you can not find anyone selling Amsoil, you can become a dealer for like $20. Just go the web site and sign up. I have 3 vehicals, so I order all my own oil & filters from them. As a side note, Amsoil oil filters will filter particles as small as 6 microns, <12 for the life. Compare that to Frams which do no better then 20 microns when they're new. If you get the high performance oil, you only need to change it every 12 to 20 thousand miles as apposed to 3-6k. Just get two filters, and change one after about 6k niles upon initially switching to Amsoil. When switching to a high performance oil/filter, your likely to get a lot of garbage into teh filter initially. Also, STAY AWAY FROM QUICKY MART TYPE OIL CHANGE PLACES. You never know what your getting, and they are not professionals by any definition. If you don't want Amsoil, go with Castrol Syntec. Do not use Quaker State. If you'r leary about switching to synthetic, plan on changing the oil every 2k miles at most.

that's as good as you can get without going to Amsoil. The mobile1 filters are actually not too bad.
