Hey, guys i am searching for help with my 89 Daytona 2.5L TBI... Non turbo...

Basicly it quit and left me on the side of the road the other day... would not start agian... it cranks the starter but its hard to get any fire out of it... Frist thing I looked at was the spark plugs and discovered that the one in the master cylinder was bent up strait... and extremely chared... the plugs themselves where less then 3 months old.

I replaced the plugs... its still very hard to get started and once its going it starts to backfire up out of the TBI unit. I would hate to see this be the death of my daytona. However i am not sure where to even start... It sounds like it jumped time but... well that kind of where i need help.

any more info you might need just let me know and ill get it to you has fast as i can...

Thanks in advance

Run ECU codes http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html tell us what you get.

Why did you have a sparkplug in the master cylinder?  The brake system doesn't need spark.

Get a timing light ($20) and check your timing.

see what you can make out of this.. 12 25 26 24 16 47 55 12 has been there a while... I must of miscalled the master cylinder... sorry about that what i mean is the cylinder farthest on the left.  Every time it cycles around it pops air out of the TBI... so its basicly a rev pop rev pop rev pop

By farthest to the left to you mean by the transmission or by the timing belt?  The non-turbo engines are non-interference so the pistons should not ever be hitting the sparkplugs, if they are that is a good indication the engine has some mechanical issues.  During the days before the engine died did the engine make any strange noises or was it pretty quiet/smoothly operating?

Here are what the codes mean:
12 Battery or computer recently disconnected
16* Loss of battery voltage detected with engine running
24* Throttle position sensor over 4.96V (SEE NOTE #3)
25 Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) motor driver circuit shorted or target idle not reached, vacuum leak found
26 Peak injector circuit voltage has not been reached (need to check computer signals, voltage reg, injectors) (SEE NOTE #4 )
47 Battery voltage too low and alternator output too low
55 End of codes

When my cam broke it acted a lot like this but didn't mess up the sparkplugs or pistons.... which makes me think its a timing issue, but the AIS could also cause a similar effect.

Here is the list of things I would check and their order
1 make sure the battery terminals are tightly connected, the battery is fully charged and the alternator is functioning correctly
2 Check for vacuum leaks
3 AIS - check it to make sure its functioning properly, clean or replace if needed (this is on the throttle body, a pic of it is on pg 107 of the Haynes repair manual)
4 check injector resistances, possibly try a fuel system cleaner
5 check timing
6 check compression

Also you might want to check at the opposite end of the throttle body make sure  that  the plug is in there. Mine was not there and it was not  running  right at all. It backfired, make sure all vac lines are ran correctly I had some of the same codes.  I redone my vac. lines and got rid of all codes. Hope that this helps. Good  luck.

Hey guys,
several mouths later i was able get in there really well.. and you would have never guess what the real problem was.

It threw a rocker arm and the thing was just loosly sitting there... i set there looking at that scratching my head wondering how in the heck did it do that?

Anyone else heard of this. Wierd. It runs like it did before after about 2 hours of trying to get it back in there.

Did you replace the lifters?? If not, I can assure you that rocker arm will pop out again.
Worn lifters is what causes the rockers to pop of. Its an easy fix. They are cheap.
I say again.......If you did not replace the lifters, the rocker will pop back out.
