hey i have a 91 Stealth, base model, unfortunately... anyway, I've had some trouble with it since I bought it a year and a half ago. It was sorta an impulse buy, but I have grown to love it. Well right now, my clutch has recently just kinda "loosened up". I don't really know what that meens, but I'm kinda scared I may need to pump some more dollars into the thing. It still goes into and out of gear fine, a little grinding into second gear, but its hasn't seemed too terrible. But my clutch pedal is almost all the way depressed and the final two inches to the floor the clutch will release and allow me to shift. I'm bracing myself for bad news, so if I need a new clutch, what would be a good reliable brand and what can I count on for a price to replace/ repair it. Any input would be great! And I'm not a mechanic at all so basic analysis would be very helpful. Peace...

some signs are when its slips or smells, when it slips the engine will rev with out you going anywhere and it will finnaly grab, you should know if it smells or not.

You may need to bleed the hydralics for the clutch, or your clutch is wore out.

Replacing a clutch isn't to hard to install, there is only 8 bolts or so holding the pressure plate up once you get the trans off. Then get the alignment too with your clutch kit and make sure its aligned before tightening it up and trying to mount the trans back in. If you do do it your self and need any help i can give over online let me kno.

all this is very helpful, thanks. I probably won't be doing any of the work myself, considering I'm not a mechanic and I'm a college student with no time for spare projects. When you say the clutch "slips", is that in the middle of driving, or from stop position to take off? I really don't feel it slippping while driving in gear, but after I get out of the car after a drive, I do notice a slight smell like hot brakes or something. Really I haven't paid too much attention to it. Also, my car just hit 102,000 miles, and since I've had the car haven't replaced the clutch or done any trans work on it. Does it sound to anyone like the clutch maybe is on schedule to be replaced? I'm just stabbing in the dark, trying to get as much info as possible. Also, being in a college town, I really don't want to be ripped off at the shop. Anyone able to give me a ballpark number to what is reasonable for the labor and part cost to replace my clutch? Thanks again

800 if you go thew a company. best thing to do would be to order the clutch and bearings in a kit. then take it to a tranny shop somewhere away from where you live. they will take more advantage to how close you live. trust me i've been screwed before.

sounds like it will need to be replaced. if there is a smell then theres sliping. it will cost around 800 to do it or thats what a shop asked to do my friends clutch in there jetta. Im lucky my bosses dad, who runs a shop is going to replace my trans and do a clutch for 250 in labor plus the cost of the clutch (since i have a spare trans) i wont need anything for that.
another thing is, if the clutch is really bad then it will slip all the time like from starts and just changing gears and will have a brake like smell.

Eh, you only get charged 800 or so if you take it to a dealership and have the work done there, ORR Chevrolet here in Texarkana wanted 700 just to install the clutch, and that was if I provided ALL the parts. They laughed at me when I said I could take it to someonewho has done work on thesevehicles before and they only wanted 360 dollars. Dealerships (or atleast here inEast Texas) don't want to go near a Stealth or 3000GT or even want to order the parts for you, and they will only do something like a Clutch replacement to get as much money out of you as possible. The best thing I can recommend for you to do is ask around and ask your friends if they know anyone who knows a person that works on the vehicles, you can get a good price that way. I just had to replace the clutch and flywheel (could have been resurfaced but I chose a Fidanza flywheel over the original, nabbed one brand new for 333 w/free shipping through Ebay) but I got down as low as 165 dollars for labor, that's it and I would have to say that was a good deal here.
