Help I'm really confused. I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota with a 5.2l V-8 engine. After changing the water pump the car would not start. After doing some troubleshooting It looks like there is a problem with the electrical system somewhere. When I dumped the codes in the computer I get a Cam position sensor. After finally sorting out where this sensor is (I am assuming that this is the sensor under the distributor cap.) I changed it, the distributor cap, and rotor. No luck. From there I swapped out the coil without any luck. Finally, I changed out the cam position sensor. Still nothing. The code is still reporting a cam position sensor fault. Is there something that I am missing or did I just get a faulty part from my Dodge Dealership?

It's possible that the sensor they gave you is no good. But I wouldn't know. I had a similar problem where my truck died when i was driving and wouldn't start again. I replaced the coil and my dist. cap and rotor. I never pulled numbers but it turned out to be my crank position sensor. So it could be that. Dunno if that helps.

A bad crank position sensor can also give you the same code.

I swapped the crank position sensor after I did the cam position sensor. I had guessed that the crank position sensor could be generating the same code. Still no luck.

Nope the only code that I am getting is a P340 Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction. It is really consistent. I can reset the code. It comes up as soon as I start cranking the engine.

Ok, thats better..this is No Cam Signal at the PCM. This leads us back to the distributor. Is the rotor turning?

Yes it is, or at least it was before I swapped the cam position sensor.

Pretty much leaves only the pickup assembly in the distributor or the ring that passes/rotates thru it..these can break or loosen. The pickup could still be bad or you have a pinched or broken wire from the distributor/pickup asm to the PCM or the PCM is fried.

Thanks I did pull the pickup from the distributor and inspected it. There are no broken or pinched wires there. I guess it could be in the harness itself. I'll check the pickup assembly. I am assuming that if the pickup assembly is loose or broken then I'll need to get a new distributor. Hopefully, the PCM isn't fried.
