Car Won't start Code shows Cam Position Sensor - 1/13/2007 9:42:19 PM    zymurgist   Posts: 7 Joined: 1/13/2007 Status: offline Help I'm really confused. I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota with a 5.2l V-8 engine. After changing the water pump the car would not start. After doing some troubleshooting It looks like there is a problem with the electrical system somewhere. When I dumped the codes in the computer I get a Cam position sensor. After finally sorting out where this sensor is (I am assuming that this is the sensor under the distributor cap.) I changed it, the distributor cap, and rotor. No luck. From there I swapped out the coil without any luck. Finally, I changed out the cam position sensor. Still nothing. The code is still reporting a cam position sensor fault. Is there something that I am missing or did I just get a faulty part from my Dodge Dealership? Post #: 1

But I wouldn't know. I had a similar problem where my truck died when i was driving and wouldn't start again. I replaced the coil and my dist. cap and rotor. I never pulled numbers but it turned out to be my crank position sensor. So it could be that. Dunno if that helps. (in reply to zymurgist) Post #: 2

I had guessed that the crank position sensor could be generating the same code. Still no luck. (in reply to Chump) Post #: 4

It is really consistent. I can reset the code. It comes up as soon as I start cranking the engine. (in reply to Chump) Post #: 6

RE: Car Won't start Code shows Cam Position Sensor - 1/14/2007 6:41:15 PM    Chump Posts: 540 Joined: 9/22/2005 Status: offline Pretty much leaves only the pickup assembly in the distributor or the ring that passes/rotates thru it..these can break or loosen. There are no broken or pinched wires there. I guess it could be in the harness itself. I'll check the pickup assembly. I am assuming that if the pickup assembly is loose or broken then I'll need to get a new distributor. Hopefully, the PCM isn't fried. (in reply to Chump) Post #: 12
